David Gettleman Cleaning House

I think AE got cut because Gettleman thinks Hixon should be in the game as a #4 and not AE. I assume Gettleman has no say in depth-chart or play-time. When he saw AE and not Hixon getting in the game on Sunday, he decided to make the change. I think everyone new that this was going to be AE's last year here anyway - your backups need to either be proven vets or high-upside guys. Armanti was neither.

Edit: Hixon isn't a great example of either but is both more-proven and has higher upside.

That's the first explanation I've heard that makes some logical sense.

If true, it would certainly tell us that all is not well between the coaching staff and Gettleman. But then, that would be no major surprise, would it?

i really hope so. this team is too loose and too happy when game time comes. they need to be hungry and pissed. they've gotten complacent and comfortable, even when losing. they accept it as just something that happens and just shrug it off. they'd become good losers and that's the culture. i really hope gettleman is changing that culture and i think this may be part of it. if you aren't helping the team perform, you are likely going to be leaving the team. it doesn't matter how much you are liked, how great you are in practice, or how hard you try. results are all that matter. i think maybe hurney was too optimistic about his players and was too much of a buddy. i dont want them to see gettleman as an enemy, but i do want them always looking over their shoulder and never comfortable with where they are or how they're doing.

This is why I never gave a poo when Cam sulked or was near tears after losses...at least you knew he gave a poo.  I feel like the coaching staff (with an assist from the media) has neutered his competitive spirit.

Perhaps your best post ever.  I like what DG is doing.  There are no more sacred cows.  Unfortunately, it should have been this way since day 1 but our reporter - turned GM was inexperienced and treated draft picks like family.

DG is doing what should be done.  He is moving on from players that are not contributing or no longer part of the plan.  This creates roster spots and cap space for players that will help the team.  If our record doesn't improve, expect more of this in Nov and Dec.  With dead money and poor personnel decisions, this is a process.

Good points.

I sit close to the Panthers bench and there is plenty of fire before kickoff, especially with the defense.  Star is the exception but I think that's his personality.  No knock against him but Star and Hardy couldn't be more different.

We have become good losers.  As a whole, they seem OK with losing and rather apathetic after the game.  There is no expectation for winning and not enough disappointment for losing. I do believe that is a problem with our culture.  There needs to be a greater sense of accountability and urgency with winning games and individual battles.  Unfortunately, I don't see that happening with RR.

Cam needs WRs that are over 6 ft tall. Hixon would give Cam a bigger target under pressure.

The sudden release of Armanti Edwards has Panthers fans scratching their heads. Not because they feel Armanti deserved a roster spot, mind you, but because of the timing. Armanti was released on a Tuesday after a game he was barely involved in and made no noticeable mistakes. On a list of players who were at fault for the loss to the Cardinals, Armanti would be near the bottom. Commence head scratching.

It is becoming clearer now that 2013 is a year for David Gettleman to clean house. Unproductive, often injured, or otherwise irrelevant players.... watch your back.

Jimmy Clausen, Jon Beason, Armanti Edwards, David Gettis. All players that have been Panthers mainstays for years, but have contributed little on the field. Marty Hurney would have held on to these players out of sentiment and the promise of one day contributing.

Apparently, David Gettleman is not the sentimental type.

The Armanti Edwards release was a shot across the bow of the Panthers roster. Improve, produce, or get gone... no matter how well you are liked personally. Panthers players have become relaxed in their position on the team. If I were you I would not be laughing on the sidelines during a loss, or you could be next.

Don't think for a moment that the coaching staff has not noticed as well. If Gettleman can release a panthers mainstay player with the flick of a pen, then he can do the same with a coach. After all, it is the coaches who have failed to develop their players into aggressive performers with a winning mentality.

What seems harsh to some is actually the mind set of winning franchises. I guess that's why we are not accustomed to it.

A cleaner, meaner Carolina Panthers franchise is in our future.

Didnt you say you were beginning to miss Hurney in another thread? Which is it?

i may be reading too much into this, but after listening to some of this is gross, he talks a lot about goofing around in the locker room.  they talk about pranks and telling jokes and having fun.  i've never been inside an nfl locker room, so maybe this goes on everywhere.  but to what extent??  also, i can't remember which video, but recently greg olsen was talking about practice and made it sound like it was "different" and every team does things differently/  i know this true.  but it didn't sound convincing.

You mean professional football players should always be striving to improve to help the football team or risk being sent packing? Wow...who would have thought NFL players should be subject to this mantra? Of course I'm being sarcastic. I've got no problem with drafting all around good character individuals, but complacency should not be accepted and when they step on the football field they should play with an aggressive, play to win mentality instead of playing not to screw up. However, our head coach has not implanted this mentality into the team, due to him also living (and dying) by the play not to lose mentality. If any fan of this team wants to point to one all encompassing reason why the defense, while good, can't get a critical stop or the offense can't punch in a TD instead of a field goal when it matters, well there you go. I get it, our players don't execute and make mistakes but there's 31 other NFL teams that do too. It's about mentality and preventing the snowball effect. That's what makes the difference in a winning team and a losing team.
