Hurney purge continues....killing the ghost

Of course Gettleman isn't in charge. JR is the owner. Not Gettleman. But there is such a thing as delegation, whereby the owner allows the GM to do what he thinks is best for the football side of the franchise...

The fact that JR allowed Hurney to stick around here for as long as he did speaks volumes to me.

Hurney was his yes man, and ultimately his scapegoat. JR told him to purge the roster in 2010, and that's exactly what Hurney did.

If you can't make a difference in 9 months with a poo situation you've been handed, gtfo.-TheRed logic. lol

What is your definition of "make a difference"?

If it's stand by while your offensive line falls to poo, I'm not seeing it.

Everybody knew when Rivera DID NOT lose his job that he was on a short leash and that a slow start would lead to an early canning.

That strategy is FAIL and why I hated it then.  If your coach is not who you envision leading your club for at least the next 3-5 years than why waste the entire offseason, training camp and first weeks of the regular season with him still leading your club?  Especially with a new GM !?!?!?

It is a failure of leadership, not Ron Rivera.  He was set up to fail.

I'm a fan of coach Rivera.  Assistant Coach Rivera.

It is clear this team is not prepared going into big match ups and it has been clear for over a year.  The Panthers have wasted time they will never get back.  Yet canning Rivera now is just as idiotic as NOT canning him in February.

It's such speculation that Jerry Richardson has already done it twice. This year with Rivera, and in 2010 with John Fox.

What do we know though, right?

I remember hearing this in 2010. When did it come out this time? Serious question. Not trying to argue.

Wahh wahh he didn't sign more players!

Who the fug wants to play for this team? The player would actually want to play for this team...so its not always up to the GM on who he can actually land.

DG has done a great job setting this team up for the future...which we all knew was going to happen when they brought Rivera back #anotherlameduckyear

He has also established credibility for this teams FO by showing others that he won't be taking the same stupid trades that Hurney did...and he has shown he will not overpay players.

JR didn't say it but you can look at it the situation and form your own conclusion. When you combine the fact he allowed two lame duck head coaches since 2010 with the coaches we've hired to surround our young QB with, it sure seems like JR is on a budget with the staff.

Ron Rivera: passed over for the job like what, half a dozen times? Ran out of Chicago as DC. Took a job as LB coach in San Diego.

Mcdermott: Fired from the Eagles.

Chud: Fired as OC from the Browns and took a job as tight ends coach in San Diego.

Mike Shula: Pretty much ran out of everywhere he's been (NFL and college), developed David Garrard for the Jaguars.

Ken Dorsey: No coaching experience whatsover.

Our ST coach gets fired. Instead of finding a new guy, what do we do? Save money and promote his assistant from within.

Yet we wonder why this franchise is still stuck in mediocrity.

Just how different is Gettleman from Hurney?

We still having glaring holes on our roster. If we sign three nobody's to fill those spots that will tell us plenty. I hope not.

How is he different?  Hurney would have extended Edwards for $3 - $4 mil per year and said 'He has just about completed the transition to WR.  We like to build through the draft and expect big things from him in the coming years.'

When the only other person you have to compare your current GM to is Marty Hurney, there isn't really a debate.

This speaks to a larger problem that has been allowed to permeate within the culture of this franchise. JR is responsible for it.

The only issue I have so far with DG is the drafting of Kugbila and Barner (and maybe AJ Klein) when there were so many other holes. Otherwise he has gotten rid of dead weight QUICKLY, fixed some of the cap problems and done OK in freee agency.

Hopefully as he gets more freedom and money he will do very well.

Way to early to tell.
