So today is a first day my German Shepherd pup is crate free while I'm at work...

Dogs get excited by things they see through the windows, things they smell and things they hear, like kids/other dogs playing outside, mail man walking by, etc. If they're indoors without an outlet to let out that excitement, they take it out on furniture and anything else laying around. That's why you usually don't find the entire house in shambles, rather you find one thing has been slowly, methodically and completely destroyed by chewing. The first week I left my pit mix out of his crate, he ate an entire seat cushion off our couch and I found him sitting happily in the crater he'd made. Our trainer suggested keeping at least the bottom half of our windows closed so our dog couldn't see through them. It actually worked for us. He calmed down a lot. That and we provided about every chew toy imaginable to him.

You handled things in the video well though, and good for you for sticking with his training rather than crating him back up.

You need to correct behavior as it happens...too late now.

Now try having a dog that will misbehave and then punish itself. She will shred a paper towel  secretly then I'll happen to see her in her cage....I go in to the living room and find the shredded paper towel.

Two lab mixes in my house. Crate trained early, but now have free reign around the house during the day. No pee or poop since puppy age. (their 4 and 3yrs now)

If something is torn up, a towel or even one of my kids diapers....All I have to say is "Who did this" and if the boy did it, he'll drop his head and wander off. If the girl lab did it.....ears back, and either tries to shove her body inbetween my legs or runs and jumps onto the couch and lays down. I'll try to record it next time it happens and post.
