So today is a first day my German Shepherd pup is crate free while I'm at work...

You need to correct behavior as it happens...too late now.

Now try having a dog that will misbehave and then punish itself. She will shred a paper towel  secretly then I'll happen to see her in her cage....I go in to the living room and find the shredded paper towel.

Something that a behaviorist told us when working with our second dog.

If the dog is left alone and tears things up it will begin to associate that with your returning which only reinforces the behavior you want to stop.

You've got to approach leaving them alone by starting with very short time periods and gradually increase the time.

How old is he?

High energy dogs, and "smart" dogs don't fare so well when young and left out of the crate....too much going on in that brain.

7 month old 70lbs puppy. We left him alone before for short periods of time and he did well. Now he destroys poo lol

Yea, far too young to leave for that long.

They don't really destroy that much stuff until they have a lot of energy and are strong enough to do the destroying....

I would bet that you may have to crate him for another couple years, or get some in depth training for him.
