NC has 3 of the poorest cities in 'merica

I got a knife pulled on me many years ago by some Lumbee Indian kids at Boy Scout camp. True story.

Why does it say the population is 135,000 though? Unless they're counting the whole area around there and Laurinburg, only like 20,000 people live in Lumberton.

And yes, I can attest that Southeast NC beyond the coast is absolutely trash. I worked just outside of Whiteville all summer, and although some places around there like Lake Waccamaw seems to house a lot of old money, the whole area is blehhh.

Not really that surprising.

All are in rural eastern NC where the textile industry died.  These cities were built aroudn a couple of mills...when they shut down, there is nothing else there in the way of business.

Do you have access to a map? Or a computer?

Unless you count anything that's not the mountains as "Eastern NC".

We just moved from Martinsville, VA after living there for 13 years.

Couple things, the city of Martinsville's population is around 16k while surrounding Henry County and Martinsville city combined are about 67k. For those of you who don't know Martinsville, about 40 miles directly north of Greensboro just across the VA state line, it was home to Stanley Furniture, Bassett Furniture and Hooker Furniture as well as being the "Sweatshirt Capital of the World," Hanes Brands, VF, etc. were all there.

When all of the furniture companies moved their manufacturing overseas in the 90's into the 2000's the unemployment rate skyrocketed to over 24%. Today it's still 22% or so and the highest unemployment in VA.

Martinsville at one time had the most millionaires per capita in the country, now it's the haves and have-nots and nothing in between. There is truly no middle class in Martinsville. But at least the haves are trying to make something of the town and are trying to culturally improve the place and make it liveable.

I was referring to Lumberton and Roanoke Rapids......not focused on Forest City (as I don't know much about that city).

2 of the 3 cities are far Eastern NC locations....so thanks for being a smart-ass.

Two guys I lived with at ECU were from Lumberton. I still talk to them and one of them usually comes up to visit 1-2 a year. They both described Lumberton to me as a prison race war. It's a poor city and a lot of people don't have much. It's blacks/hispanics/whites/indians that don't get along with each other.  The "Lumbee" Indians absolutely hate blacks there, which is shocking because a lot of them are mixed with african americans. This is what my friend told me.

I think Lumberton is where Jordan's dad was murdered.

Spot on with everything, from the "Lumbees" right on down to Jordan's dad.

Yeah, I had to do a double check when it said 135,000.  I live in Whiteville which, as you already know, is pretty close to Lumberton... no fuging way in hell Lumberton has 135,000 people in it.

But yeah, Whiteville sucks.  This whole entire area is a black hole.  Shitty area with even shittier people in it.

But that one San Jose Mexican restaurant sh*ts on any other Mexican restaurant I've ever been to, I will say that.

I played golf the past two weekends at Land-O-Lakes off of 701... it has that going for it.  :)  Nice little golf course.

But you're right... I grew up in eastern Columbus County and there are some really shitty areas out that way...

We rode by one of my old schools on the way out there (my parents still live out that way) and it was old when I was there and that was 30 years ago... sad.

Lumberton is a dump.

As a Lumbee, I will say your friend doesn't know what he's talking about. There aren't many Lumbees in that area anyway.

PS...

"Lumbee" Indians are the largest tribe east of the Mississippi.

So why aren't Lumbees recognized federally?

We are recognized Federally, dumb ass. We just receive no government assistance whatsoever. Originally US treaties were given to tribes that gave financial assistance in exchange for peace and/or valuable resources. Since Lumbees were nonviolent and possessed no resources the government had no reason to make a treaty with them. In 1956 the Federal government finally recognized Lumbees, but still withhold all financial benefits...

Because rich Cherokees own the casinos and financially support/fund politicians, who in return block Lumbees from getting Federal assistance, which would drastically reduce the amount Cherokees get.

Any other stupid, shortsighted questions full of inaccuracies?
