Geno Smith > Cam Newton

Yeah...Saw this thread coming

Me being a well known WVU homer aside from my Panther fandom, I think I'll sit this one out so as not to be accused of conflict of interest

What I'd rather talk about related to this game is the decision by Mike Smith to go for it on 4th and goal at the end of the first half. The Falcons got stuffed. And how much did they end up losing the game by? Two points.

I'd love to hear from the "COACHES WHO HAVE BALLS GO FOR IT ON FOURTH DOWN THAT''S HOW YOU WIN OMG WE WOULD WIN EVERY TIME IF WE DID THAT" crowd on how they explain this. If I recall correctly, Smith's done that in a couple of games this season and it's been a bad decision each time. And here I was led to believe this was a sure path to victory.

All I will say about this is ATL hasn't got one of the best short yardage backs in Tolbert or a 6'5 250lb QB that is also a running threat. And basically Rivera has had that "way to conservative" attitude and it annoys everyone! Haha!

2011

Jags game winning drive IN A MONSOON  :ss:

New Orleans. TD pass with 4 mins left (Defense gave up a game winning TD)

Vikings. Cam moved down the field (including completing a 4th and long) Mare missed game tying FG

Falcons. Cam again moved down the field then Mare missed a game winning FG

2012

Chicago. Potential GW FG then defense blew it

2013

Seattle. Williams fumble.

Also there have been many close games Rivera has gone full retard.

People need to realize that You lose some games, and some times you look bad losing. You cant compare Cam this week with anyone who won. He will look bad, hell it was bad we lost. You also cant expect to see that Cam often, hes better than that. I do however wish we had a team that would pull off the win in close games, but we dont. The reason we dont is we are young every were. In critical situations a Vet knows not to make a bonehead play to lose the game, we dont. We also have an inexperienced coach learning how to win close games. How hard would it be to have the balls to go for it on 4th when you know you team always messes up in key spots. Its a combination of everyone, not knowing their role completely. Unfortunately we still have more to learn so we are in for more games like this that will make me smash a lamp(did that after bills). we need to step back a little and try to enjoy watching the guys that are growing into a team. I know some are tired of moral victories, i am too, but ill take what i can get im a die hard panthers fan im not leaving. ill wait for our time and willl be all the happier for it.

Geno Smith has been losing games for his team...   he's no where near Cam's talent.  Funny though, if there was a defense to close out games in 2011 it wouldn't even be a contest.  14 out of 16 games leading in the 4th quarter?  lol

While we're on the topic, it was glorious watching the dirty birds absolutely collapse right after their big TD to take the lead.  Now how many of us thought that Matt Ryan had just pulled off yet another game-winning drive in the fourth quarter, of which he leads the NFL in that regard?

I thought he had done it, but then the defense took the field and allowed the Jets to throw quick slants all the way down to FG range.

Sound familiar at all?  As much as I hate him, Ryan did his job as the QB, as Cam has done plenty, and the defense shat the bed when called upon.

On the vast majority of our losses, Cam leaves the field for the last time with the Panthers winning. The defense then costs us the game.

Last time Cam saw the field against Buffalo, we were winning.

That happens more often than not.

The whole concept of "game winning drives" in that situation is a complete fallacy.

And if Cam could have scored a TD on EITHER of the possessions where the defense gave him the ball inside the 30 yd line....we would have won the game.

Giving a team a 6-3 lead in the third and expecting the defense to shut out the opposing team is NOT having the defense cost you the game.

Even Sunday....Cam and the offense had MANY times where they coudl have and shoudl have scored.  Only to piss it away and send the defense right back out there.  The offense cost us Sunday...not the defense.

Obviously after a bye week, you want to put up more than 6 points, so I think you can expect threads like this.  What is funny is the hyper, defensive, ban him, take it away please, guys who are the Cam "minute men" and always there with another excuse.  We are 1-3 and headed toward another sub 500 season.  Defend on.

as that's true, typically QBs are credited for "game winning drives" where the FG kicker actually wins the game.  Brady has yet to win a SB on a game winning TD drive and yet he's claimed the comeback king.

more often than not the defense is expected to close out if your QB gets you more points than the other team.

I do agree the offense continues to poo the bed.  There is a bigger issue at hand and hopefully Gettleman hires the right problem solver, and JR stays the fug out of the way.

yeah, let the clowns clown on, no need to ban them..  takes away all the fun at laughing at threads like this.

I think it all well to criticize our players when they are not playing good but sometimes people take it a little over board. Cam has a good game, no threads pop up but when he has a bad game, we have tons are threads like these showing up. Trade him, draft a new qb etc. He does make some silly plays at times but hey he is still young. As long as he has a panther jersey on, I will cheer for him. This goes from the Collins, Buerline, Peete, Delhomme and even Clausen. Let's support our guys. We are 1-3 with alot of football left. I think once we string together some wins we will be in the thick of things.

Well it was a fun thread to start but glad I did.  From reading the responses most of you are still very optimistic about Cam.  Good!  I guess I'm in the pessimistic crowd.  We're in year 3 and I'm not seeing big improvement in Cam's game.  Perhaps a new talented wide receiver and an offensive minded new HC (Rivera is good as gone as we all know) and OC will turn things around like what happened in KC...here's to hoping b/c I'm soooo tired of getting all excited for the start of NFL and then to see our season is done by week 5....

The last time we had any significance was in 2008...
