With a new coaching staff....could Newton be Josh Freeman'ed?

That's a huge stretch man...Cam Newton doesn't have anywhere near the amount of moxie Jake Delhomme had.  In his prime, Jake was as clutch as Joe Montana.  Cam Newton has all the talent in the world but I wouldn't want the ball in his hands with the game on the line.  Cam is the type of QB that needs to blow out all the teams he plays to be a winner...and that needs to change FAST.

As clutch as Joe Montana?  Whoa... easy there bro.

We won games under Jake by pounding the ball on the ground and asking him to make just enough plays to win.  How many would-be game winning drives by Cam have we seen Rivera and company piss away with insanely conservative coaching at the ends of games?  With Cam and the talent at QB to actually open up the offense, those Jake-era teams would've been scary as hell.

Alright alright I let the homer in me get out of control....but Jake had some incredible comeback victories that Cam has none of.  You might be right that if Cam played under a John Fox team (who was also an insanely conservative head coach) they would be scary, but I still think you'd see similar results.  Different situation, but he's still the same person. I know he's young but after three years, we've yet to see anything resembling a clutch victory.  You can place the blame on Rivera but Cam is the one out there making the throws...so you have to start looking at the QB at some point.  He had some bad luck on Sunday with the drops and he started to force throws at the end of the game...but this isn't a new development.

I love Jake, but put Cam Newton at QB on those teams that Jake played for and watch what happens.  There's a Lombardi in Charlotte already if that was the case.

no.

from the first second he stepped on the field against jacksonville in 2003, jake delhomme was the reason why the teams he was under center in carolina were successful.

My point was that how many times have we seen Cam Newton leave the field for the last time late in a game with a lead only to watch the defense and Rivera's gutless prevent D give the game away?  Jake had a better OL, better receivers, and a better D.

Like I said, I'm not knocked Jake one bit.  I love the guy.  I wish Cam had some of that same fire in him, but that isn't necessary to win in this league.  You don't see Peyton Manning acting like a cheerleader or screaming at teammates.  Not everyone has to be that style of leader.

100% true.  Jake's first game as a Panther was a clutch, come-from-behind victory.  Cam Newton's first game was a close loss, where he had the ball in his hands with a chance to tie the game at the end.  The trends from both of these games continued for years to come.

Jake played a huge role in the success of those teams, but he wasn't the reason those teams had success.  He was #3 on the list IMO.

1. defense

2. running game

3. Jake/Smitty

I'd flip flop #1 and #3...as you can see by the current Carolina Panther squad, defense can only do so much.  You need the guys to make the clutch plays on offense to WIN.  Defense will just keep you in the game unless it is scoring.  John Kasay needs to be on that list too...he was as clutch as Delhomme (except in the Superbowl...DAMN).  Ricky Proehl was damn clutch too.

I just think it's funny how we seem to have come full circle on Jake.  When his arm fell apart and everyone was saying he sucked and was never any good, etc. it was crazy.  Now, nostalgia seems to be turning Jake into Joe Montana.  Jake was solid QB who had great moxie and clutch ability.  He was a great fit on that team, but he wasn't what made that team work.  If we had won that '03 Super Bowl, Jake would be mentioned along with the Trent Dilfers and Brad Johnsons of the world as QBs who got drug to a Super Bowl ring by being surrounded by a great team.  He wouldn't have deserved that as he went blow for blow with Tom Brady in that Super Bowl, but that would've been his legacy anyway.

Cam will never be a elite QB. I woukd trade him now, mark my words. In two years he will go the way of Josh Freeman and we will be kicking ourselves for not trading him when we had a chance. I have never seen a more bi polar, inconsistent QB in my life. How Cam can go from Peyton Manning to Jimmy Clausen in a matter of just 45 minutes blows my mind into oblivion. I dont know what Cam has done to be so loved and deemed untouchable around here. A NFL analyst said it best.. "Cam is not a NFL QB, he is simply a big man with a big arm throwing the football."

If Cam goes elsewhere, we'll get it rubbed in our faces once again in terms of what a sorry organization we have in place.  Remember when John Fox was the root of all of our problems?  Just get a coach in here that has some balls they said.  Fox is a lousy coach they said.  How has his career gone since leaving Charlotte?  Hell, the guy took a The Golden Calf of Bristol coached team to the playoffs and actually won a road playoff game with that team.  If Cam left here, he'd find more success elsewhere and it would suck to watch.  I live in Denver and have to have it rubbed in my face constantly about what a joke of a franchise the Panthers are to have kicked John Fox to the curb.  I thought the Panthers needed a change from Fox, but it was actually the opposite - Fox needed a change from the Panthers.

Unfortunately, it's finally coming home to roost for me that the Panthers issues are bigger than any player or coach.  We have an organizational issue.  JR wants to mimic the Steelers organizationally, but we aren't even close.
