Is Rivera Done Now?

Recommended Posts

Much, much more than the source, I'd like to know the potential candidate(s).

There shall be plenty-o speculation on that topic

Brenston Buckner imo.

Possible, but I think that other than old teammates like Proehl and Smith, most - if not all - of the connections Buckner had in the Panthers locker room and organization are long gone.

Yeah I'm saying the leak is bogus. Gettleman isn't lying. There has been no background checks. All Buckner has to do is say someone from Charlotte has been running a background check and bam, story.

It's possible.

From what I've heard, Buckner can be a tad spiteful. He's admitted feeling as though the team disrespected him a bit since his departure. So I suppose Buck starting a fake story to take a swipe at the team wouldn't necessarily shock me.

Gun to my head? I don't think he did it, but it's a plausible theory.

Foxy definitely tanked his last season, but I don't think RR did, at least he wasn't. He may tank the rest of the season, now, but I think he was trying to save his job at the beginning of the season.

Some of the stories that came out from Fox's last year were positively infuriating.

Rivera though? Effort's never been an issue. It's ability (or lack of it)

Here's Yahoo!'s Shutdown Corner's take on the leak.

But the last line of Rapoport's tweet is what's most intriguing. The fact that one possible candidate already knows he's in consideration is big.

Let's think this one through a bit ...

If it was a coach currently employed by an NFL team, we'd be talking about tampering here. And Gettleman, borne from the New York Giants, is too smart (even as a first-time GM) to let that information slip if that was the case. He has been around the game a long time and isn't known as a man who gabs endlessly.

So assuming it's a coach who currently it out of the league, you'd naturally come across some familiar — and big — names: Lovie Smith, Jon Gruden and Bill Cowher. The last one is one Panthers fans have heard for years. He has family in North Carolina and reportedly at least has thought about his interest in the job at times.

If anyone did background checks and one of those checked did leak the info, that would be the last person I would consider for HC. And it probably would be someone not interested in the job anyway.

Yes, Rivera is done as a head coach. The only ones left that may think he is a legit NFL head coach all have the last name "Rivera".

I hate it that we have to sit through 12 more weeks of this crap, all the time knowing he is a goner. The players know it too, and that is going to have a big impact on how they play the rest of the year.

End it now. Make Skipper or McD or Wilkes interim. There is no point on continuing to just go through the motions.

But JR won't do it.

I'd be surprised to see a mid-season firing but I wouldn't mind it.  Yeah, it doesn't mean we'll win, but it means the new coach gets some extra practice time and evaluation time to help him going into next year.  You can't tell me that's not a leg up?  Plus, it might send a message, but who knows, I have no faith in this franchise and ownership.
