Rivera's biggest weakness

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

I know most will say game management.  I agree that's a big one.  I'm no longer certain it's his biggest deficiency.

He's been fairly decent at defensive game planning, and as a defensive coach he's helped dismantle some of the best QBs in the league (including Peyton).

But where do I see a huge issue right now?

Roster building.

Talent evaluation isn't as big a part of a head coach's job as it is a GM's, but it is still a skill you need because as the head coach, you're the guy who sets the depth chart.  You've also got a GM in this case who's willing to listen to your input on who you like, want to sign and want to let go.

Some of Rivera's decisions in those areas have been questionable.

That's not to say I disagree with all of his roster/depth chart choices, but it's enough of them that I see it as an issue.

Fua knows the scheme.

Which is the reason why they brought him back - temporarily - while Edwards is hurt.

But it's valid that he shouldn't even have survived to the end of last year's roster.  You do a better job of building the roster to begin with and you don't come to this point of needing him.

Charles Godfrey is another one who I think Rivera values more than he should.  Byron Bell is in that category too.

And let's talk about Captain Munnerlyn being a starter.  I like Captain, but... :(

I'll take B players who play with intensity and purpose, over A players who come out and go through the motions. I think the culture that has been put into place is the downfall of the team. Until we practice and play like we want to win the championship, we'll be stuck in limp dick land...be that on the coaches or the FO. Hopefully Gettleman is here to change all of that.

He's just not a head coach.  Great defensive coordinator, lousy head coach.  Some coaches seem too heavy handed in their approach in terms of handling their coordinators.  In terms of how he handles his offensive coordinators, he seems too hands off IMO.  He let Chud pretty much tank our season last year running cutesy bullshit for the first 6 weeks.  He's letting Shula do the same this year by running all these deep drops with slow developing routes behind a patchwork OL.  He needs to step in and tell these guys that look, we know we have a unique threat at QB both with his arm and his legs. Let's not fall in love with either.  We have to balance our attack and make sure that we're capitalizing on both while compensating for an OL that we know is not strong.

Sometimes I get the vibe that Rivera gives leeway to certain players because of their character rather then talent. Like Bell for instance personally texts Rivera after the horrible Bills game and all is good and he's back for every snap. I like Cam, but after the 3 INTs, I would have benched him late in the game like Texans did Schaub and let Cam know what's up.

I think that's a reason why Munnerlyn has been a starter.

Cam knows what's up -- benching him at the end of this game wouldn't have helped.

if he has another game like this, maybe, but I don't know that benching him would change his attitude.  dude is already really hard on himself
