Jon Beason Officially a Giant.......Passes his Physical

What are the rules on compensatory picks?  Stats wise, he hasn't done too much because of being injured.  Do they go back to when he was a Pro Bowler in 2010?

Honest question.

It's a formula based on the contract ($/yr figure) that the FA signs with his new team, as well as starts and any accolades that occur in the first year of the new deal. There's also the factor of how many new free agents a team brings in as opposed to how many leave. If a team signs more free agents than they lose, then they will likely not receive any comp picks, So even if you had kept him and he left in free agency, there's no guarantee you'd get a pick.

Also for clarification, the comp picks only take into account players who get let go without a new deal, as opposed to those cut/waived.

I've heard undisclosed and conditional. There is a difference there. I feel like the people angry at this trade do not fully understand where Beason was in his contract.

Jon Beason had a contract set to void before the new league year. That means Jon Beason had no value to us beyond this 2013 season. Jon Beason was not starting for us, and we have a young guy in AJ Klein the Panthers want to give more reps to. This move is about the future.

As for the compensatory picks I don't think we would have gotten any of those. I do not understand the language but the fact he did not see out his contract but instead voided it could take away that compensatory selection. Also compensatory selection are based on salary and playing time. Quoted from Wikipedia but meh:

Compensatory picks cannot be traded, and the placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player's salary, playing time, and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor.

There is no real guarantee the Beast would command a high salary or playing time. He could be out of the league next year as hard as that is to believe. So whatever we got is more valuable to us in 2014 than Beason would have been.

That micro-fracture surgery Beason had is nothing to shrug at. It is a "last resort" surgery by players trying to save their career. The number of players that fully recover from it are zero or very near zero. Beason is one of my all time favorites but he is not a valuable asset. When is the last time Beason was dominant? 2010? 2009? Think about that.

Has it crossed anyone's mind that maybe Jon didn't play against the Giants because the trade was already in the works?  In other words he wasn't necessarily benched.  Just a thought.  He seemed to be in pretty good spirits on the sideline for someone who just lost their job.

I don't think he knew he was only getting one snap.....b/c reports are he wasn't happy after

I think he was benched purely bc he hasn't been good

Giants fans are (seriously) thinking that Beason can play LB or OL.. I didn't look it up, perhaps he did many years ago in college or something.. but I think they are about to be disappointed in thinking he's going to fix their OL.. LOL @ Giants fans

I saw the conversation you're talking about.  They were joking.  It came up because some felt they have a greater need at OL than LB.

I think we can safely assume it's a 7th rounder.

I don't think that's all that safe an assumption.

Doubt it's higher than a sixth.  Fifth would surprise me, but so would a 7th.

wtf. undisclosed until when?

It generally comes out in the offseason (obviously by April).

And yeah, if you were Beason, would you like seeing a headline that said you were traded for a 6th or 7th? :(

if we got a 6th or a 7th i would poo my pants.

if we got a 5th i would poo my pants and mail them to dat alice. if the giants tank we could land a 4th-round talent with the pick.

Agreed.

People are reacting to this like Beason is the same player he was three years ago.  Much as I like him, objectively that's just not true.

For the Jon Beason of three years ago, a 5th to 7th round pick would have been ludicrous.

For the Jon Beason of 2013 though, we're probably lucky just to have gotten something back :(
