I know what you're saying in theory, but this is a figure of speech that is usually used in reference to inanimate objects, not people. In fact, I have never heard of it being used in reference to a person.

I truely doubt his intended meaning is at a person either. Maybe he used it in the sense that he believes beasons best days are behind him for our team, but a treasure for another team.

I will admit though it does seem like a stupid phrase to have used.
