Beason traded?

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Jon Beason abruptly stopped me in the Carolina Panthers locker room on Monday.

He was visibly upset about an article I'd written the week before suggesting he was near the end of his short-but-stellar career, and would have trouble getting his job at weakside linebacker back from Chase Blackburn. There was anger in his voice.

It was totally out of character for a player who had been all about character since the Panthers made him the 25th pick of the 2007 draft.

Four days later, after coach Ron Rivera and others insisted that Beason was handling the demotion like a true professional, reports surfaced that the three-time Pro Bowl will be traded to the New York Giants
if he passes a Friday physical.

Sounds like he left irritated.

And I do agree that it's great that he has a chance to go somewhere new, start over, get a chance to play, etc, but I just can't agree that it's a great move on our part, unless he is disgruntled.

And even if he is, why not try to move him for more? The Giants must be the first team Gett went to about the trade, so why not check other places first.

"Oh, you offer a 7th? Let me get back to you on that." Call other teams, let them know you have offers on the table but you're willing to talk to other teams, see what happens. Now I'm no GM, but that seems like the logical thing to do, not take the first, and essentially the lowest possible offer.

We were NOT going to get more than a 6th/7th for Beason.

He is coming off 3 surgeries in the past 18 months and has come nowhere near his pre injury performance.  Teams are just not going to take that risk and invest more than a very late round pick for him

yes...but someone who probably thought he could be good here...and I would imagine TD and others shared the thought

i don't really understand your flip flop on this.

you had been screaming about getting out from under Beason. But now you are worried about film study, leadership. The defense has been looking at Keek for a year and a half now. It's keeks team. There are enough smart people in the film room. Blackburn being one of them. He is a really bright guy.

the guys will move on.

    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
    • Well, we got our answer on Army today.
    • Not a chance the SEC could compete with the NFL.  In the large cities that are not in the Southeast, (LA, NYC, Chicago, SF) College football is an afterthought.
