Beason traded?

For those of you thinking the Giants did us a big favor by taking his contract from us, you need to know that's not really true.

They have to pay him for 13 games this year, nothing more, and his actual salary was low to begin with. We still have to eat the dead money allocated against the cap. That doesn't get traded with the player.

Doesn't matter whatsoever. I'd rather keep him for the rest of the season and possibly watch him walk at the end of the year than give him up for a 7th. Depth for an injury prone TD and the possibility that MAYBE the reason he hasn't looked great in these first 3 days isn't because he sucks now like people seem to think, but that he is just getting back into the groove of things.

Without a doubt, he's still a starter for almost every team in the NFL, and you don't find sure starters in the 7th round.

Marty is that you?

I know you're taking it in (the trade) and all.

However, I'm sorry to tell you, Beason couldn't start on any NFL team right now. And he may not even pass the physical, and/or start for long on the Giants (if he does) in the first place.

That's how bad his situation is, unless he has a miraculous recovery from his micro-surgery and other issues. Beason has barely played the past three seasons, and has been a shell of his former self when he has.

I don't blame you for loving the guy. We all know he's a great guy. But the truth is the truth.

That's just not true.

If he doesn't pass the physical, he may not even be able to stay in the league.

Have you watched him play last year and this year? He was a big liability and frankly only got playing time out of respect for what he once was. It's time to face reality.

Its not this year part of the contract they helped us with.  Beason was due to make 10.6 million next season with his prorated signing bonus.

Fire Gettleman...

A late round pick for Beason is an insult to a man that gave his all for the Panthers...

A late round pick isn't worth it...

Objectively speaking, yes it is.

All of us Panther fans look at Beason and see a superhero. The rest of the world sees a guy who isn't even playing his natural position anymore and who's been paid a lot of money despite barely playing over the past two years; a guy whose time on the field in the first few games of this season hasn't exactly produced stellar results.

Love Beason. Hate seeing him go, but sad to say this was warranted.

That guy we all remember...that just isn't him anymore :(

well, this certainly has been an interesting read, and I'm damn glad that I'm doing it on west coast time. You sure get a sense from this thread about who has the capacity to look at a situation objectively, and who has their vag twisted on a little too tight.

Beason was a class act, and I'm proud of what he did here as a Panther. I wish him the best of luck in the future.

For those wanting Nicks...he is bitching about not getting enough targets in NY, do you really think he'll get more here? Seems like we'd be bringing in a headache, and this is coming from someone who grew up in Chapel Hill.

The point is, that unallocated signing bonus stays with us as dead money. It doesn't get passed on to the Giants.

Jon was due to be a FA this offseason, and we would have been on the hook for the same amount once he retired or signed elsewhere. All we save by trading him is 13 weeks of this year's salary.

He wasn't due to be a free agent.  Please show me where that is because all I see is his contract runs through 2016.  Now the signing bonus you might be right. But that still frees up 6.5 mil

I really strongly agree with this argument. I'm not some huge homer or Beason fan, I just think it's impossible to have this logic. You don't give up on a player just because they're not as good as they once were after a significant injury. Tons of great players would be out of every sports league if that were the case.

I agree that there's obviously a chance that this is it, but he COULD start for most NFL teams this season, and he COULD conceivably return to Pro Bowl form within the next few years. It's not Davis Gettis or some other fringe player we're talking about.

Everything I've read said he would become a FA 5 days into the league year unless we chose to re-sign him before that. In which case we would have no obligation to him beyond this year salary wise.

But again, dead money doesn't just go away. We are on the hook for that no matter what.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
