Personally, I think Barner was a Louisiana Purchase type steal.  Over 2,000 yards offense in one year of D1 college football doesn't happen by accident.  The man averaged over 6 yards per carry and 11 yards per reception for his career at Oregon.

Personally, I believe expectations are way too high. I know lamichael James was a superior talent at Oregon and he has yet to meet expectations in Frisco as a change of pace guy. He was a 6th round pick for a reason. I have yet to see him perform so I can't wait to see what all the hype is about. Because there are people making him out to be a real difference maker. We'll see. Looking at him and some of his highlights at Oregon he reminds me of Goodson, who had the same amount of hype coming in. Ron Rivera seems to be excited, so maybe there is more to him than that. Looking forward to seeing him in action Sunday.

Problem is he did well at the D1 level based on a one dimensional skill set. He is really really fast and has great acceleration. HE just ran to the outside and beat everyone.

 

However a lot of the stuff he does isn't suited for the NFL and the speed obviously picks up at this level.

 

He is not listed as a good pass blocker, he doesn't break tackles, he has fumbling issues and lacks raw strength. Also some question his catching technique. Our coaches will have a lot to develop with this kid if he is going to be a serious part of the game plan.

 

I'd love to see what he can do on screens and out of the backfield but I just can't imagine it being more than a few touches.

 

Having said that, if he can gain 10+ on any of his touches fans will be going nuts for this guy

To me, this is Barner's first game in the NFL. The most important thing to me is that he doesn't turn the ball over. This matchup is very favorable for the Panthers but if we turn the ball over and give away points we can lose this game.

We've still run 0 screens to Ted Ginn, which is a glaringly obvious move that should be staring them in the face. I doubt we do anything special with Barner.

 

Haven't we done an end around to Ginn?

 

As to Barner, have to agree he's very much unknown at this point.  We know Rivera wanted a scatback.  Let's see if he gets used.

Had to double check to make sure CRA hadn't written this. You make some valid points, you just take them and spin them in a negative light.

One of the things he has been praised for is his ability to follow blocks and go where the play is designed. He is capable of bouncing it outside, but he is also a north south runner, who hits the hole and goes.

His pass pro has improved thanks to a tip from Tolbert.

He has good hands and catches the ball well. Not sure why you are concerned about this aspect.

The kid is an extremely coachable smart instinctive player. He has learned how to run lower, pass protect, the play-book, and everything else they have thrown at him. IMO, it sounds like he has earned his playing time, and it is not just being given to him.

I see a young exiting player who has picked up on everything he has been taught. You see a raw talent, who has yet to prove he belongs. I hope I am righter than you. But right now, who really knows?

You are right that if he has a good game, and any electric plays. He is going to trend up big time. Hellz, I will probably be right with that. This kid excites the hell outta me. Kinda like the wife used to. owww

With the way you view things. I can understand your angst. You see downsides. IMO, that create a tendency to under value Barner.

I see untapped potential. So my perspective is skewed to the positive side.

From everything I have read and heard, he gots this. Every play he gets this week shows how much the staff trusts him. Otherwise, he would not be getting the plays in the first place. Smith has 3 carries. If Barner can get that many, or more, this week, I think that pretty much shows he has earned the opportunities.

For the teams sake. I hope I am right. If the staff can tap his potential. Stew is going to fight to get some carries. Barner's development goes a long way in deciding Stewy's, and even DWill's, place in the Panthers future.

Personally, this kid excites me, and am giddy over the prospects he brings. So if he does play well, and has some splash type plays. I will be right there on the giddy train.

Yes we did, for 11 yards.

 

Smith and LaFell are both very good blockers, which is even more frustrating to me. Line those 3 up and throw a quick screen to Ginn. Mike Wallace broke one for a TD a couple weeks ago. Ginn could do that regularly, I feel.
