How old are you LA_Panther? I'll give you my story, maybe it will make you feel better. I worked for IBM from 1999 to late 2002, then got laid off during the aftermath of the tech bubble, working in IT. Had I not gotten laid off, I would have never landed at Microsoft, greatly futhering my carrer, which would be way better than where I would be at IBM. Life is a bitch but sometimes things just seem to work themselves out. Those were some rough times though; glad I have a savings now.

I am 35. I worked at IBM in Charlotte actually. I am talking 96/97 way back... assembly line stuff. My degree is along the lines of elearning, instructional design etc..., but the job I just lost was tech support(underemployed). Not the job I went to school for, but it was paying the rent :-)

I drove between San Diego and Texas a couple times, going through Arizona.  All I remember is it was a pretty straight shot, sped plenty, scenery was boring but it wasn't too bad.  Also, when I got out of the car in Arizona to poop at a rest stop my shoes started melting to the concrete before I got to the bathroom.

What is the drive from San Diego to Phoenix like? I've never been to AZ. Empty desert? Straight shot? Can I speed a little?

It's boring but easy. 5 hours and speed all you want. Take the 8 through Yuma and hop on (83 maybe?) in gila bend (stop speeding there). That will take you up to Goodyear/ Glendale.

Ahhhh, being from LA and all, I thought maybe you worked in the entertainment industry, Paramount just laid a bunch of people off. Harsh world sometimes here in the City of Angels. Best of luck, I'll be at the SF game.

Take the 8 east. You will pass through the horrible city of El Centro, do not stop there, even if you have to poop. Hold it. You will also pass through this terrible ghost town of Gilla Bend. It sucks more than Buffalo. Only speed traps will be right before Yuma, which is an atrocious town. Then you have more desert and dunes to look at while driving.

Word of advice, on the 8 slightly passed El Centro, there's this horrible mountain pass that you can easily die on. Everyone knows it pretty well and will speed on all the sketchy turns. Being your first time driving it, take caution and let the ass-holes wait behind you.

I'll be at the niners game too if we are making a playoff run

Gotta be VERY careful through there.  The road will HYP-NO-TIZE a man.  Drove over 2 hrs., don't remember any of it.
