Play GM: A 4th Round pick in Week 5 or 6 for Hakeem Nicks? Would you guys take it?

Versus the 50 receivers who will be available after the season for no draft picks at all?  What are my other choices?  Gettleman has proven to be very good horse trader. With the cap being flat and so many guys coming up for free agency, I doubt we have to trade anything away to get a good receiver.  So far a guy like Ginn looks like a keeper. There will be plenty more like him available. Why would we not go for a receiver or two in the draft on a 4 or 5 year rookie contract instead of the money Nicks will ask.  If the Giants trade him it will be because they don't value him much.  Why should we??

but he could help us this season. that's the difference i agree with what you said though if we didn't think he could do anything for us this season.

he would be huge for Cam, regardless if the Giants don't value him much. Also depends on what he thinks he's owed.

I don't see the Giants parting with Nicks so easily.  He has the ability to be a prime, No. 1 receiver in the NFL when healthy.  I think it would cost us too much in draft picks, which we really need to keep adding depth at places like the O line, defensive backfield, and receivers.

Also, Nicks is going to cost.  I do not doubt that his agent knows the market value of a Number 1 wide receiver in the NFL.  We can also thank the Dolphins and Wallace for whatever crazy contract demands he might want/get.

Would it be awesome if we could?  Yes!  Would it be even better if he offered a hometown discount?  Double YES!!!  Is it realistic?  Probably not.  Especially considering where we have money tied up (DLo, Stewie, CJ, Godfrey, Kalil, Beason) which won't be immediately free.  Oh yeah, and Greg Hardy is in a contract year...

I love the thought, but right now its in Gettleman I trust!  Gettlemagic!!!

That last sentence is the issue.  When you negotiate a salary as part of a trade the player has a lot of negotiating ability. He typically gets good money because we want him.  If we do nothing he becomes a free agent at the end of the year and gets thrown with everyone else and his value will go down. As you say it is really what we think he would be worth this year.  With LaFell and Ginn improving I don't know if he is a necessity this year.  You said after week 5 or 6, lets make it week 8 and we will know if he stays healthy and whether we need him or not.

I know it is only 3 games in but Ginn's numbers match up well to Nicks. Both are averaging 20 yards a catch with the biggest difference being Nicks has 9 catches and Ginn has 7.  But Ginn has 2 TDs and Nicks has none.  And all but 1 of Ginn's catches have been for first downs or TDs. I would like Ginn to get more work.  Given he is on a 1 year contract, who do you want to sign more?  Ginn who is a great returner and is starting to excel as a receiver or Nicks who will cost more, has health issues, and can't return the ball like Ginn?
