Rap is getting replaced with techno/trance?

I got so sick of the same type of music. I got to the point where I stopped listening to music for the most part, though I missed music.  Then I found House music, dance, trance, trip hop, ambient and dubstep. It was like a breathe of fresh air.

 

I still have friends who ONLY listen to alternative and rock. I see old men who still only listen to the music on 99.7.  

 

Personally, I don't want to go through life without trying new things and being open to their awesomeness. It keeps things from getting stale.  I hope I'm not the old person saying, "the things these kids listen to today is total crap" because in reality it's typically not, it's just different from what they are use to.

I was really into techno and trance music in college, but whatever passes for it now a days, I'm just not that into.  I love Daft Punk though.  The new stuff has to grow on me because I'm so used to their older stuff.

 

I find it hard to find new music I like anymore.  I've fallen back into my 90s ska/punk/powerpop roots for the past few years, and I'm happy with it.  

 

As far as the contemporary rap music, I believe it's become far too commercial.  I mean, there is so much money to be made with it, it is all starting to sound the same.  Then again, I don't go out of my way to find new rap simply because the genre is kind of played out to me.

 

If I'm going through my most played music by artist it looks like this:  Reel Big Fish, Suburban Legends, Blink 182, Lostprophets, Bowling for Soup, Less than Jake, Goldfinger, The B-52s, and the Planet Smashers...  Not a huge amount of variety.  There's also the Dropkick Murphys, Cake, and Jimmy Eat World in there as well...  Maybe slightly more variety.

 

I guess I'm one of those 30+ guys in a musical rut, and I'm fine with that.  I'll be the first one to say that most of the new music kids listen to sucks.  "I guess this is growing up."

I'm 32 and have a 6 year old and am not feeling it yet, lets hope it continues. 

 

I'm the kind of person that embraces change and doesn't think just because I grew up with it makes it better.

No one makes rap anymore anyway, at least mainstream, it's "hip-hop".  There really is a difference.  I still love 90's rap but that's where I stop.   I dig electronic genres,  but it's nothing knew.  I loved Prodigy's Fat of the Land and then Crystal Method, those were the first "main stream" electronic albums I had.  Then my brother introduced me to stuff like DJ Icey (trance) and others.  There are a ton of sub-genres.  +1 to throwing out that Skrillix didn't invent dubstep, it's true.  Dubstep really isn't like Skrillex's stuff mostly anyway.  I do like Skrillex though, it should be classified as "Transformer Sex" genre though.

I'll drop in some Lounge while I'm working at my desk .....used to listen to digital.fm, but my music tastes change all the time. My latest purchases have been the Two Steps from Hell epic music.

You would willingly subject yourself to Macklemore, but shun every other hip hop/rap artist? Yikes.

I enjoy music with a positive message, a lot of people trying to be all thug is completely lost on me, but as I said before I'm not exactly a big fan of Rap and Hip hop to begin with, more of a Singer/Songwriter indi person myself, and that's practically on the opposite side of the musical world from rap.

I never liked music growing up. It was never a part of my life. When I would drive in the car I would just sit there in silence. I was always the kid that never knew what the name of a popular song was or what the lyrics were to some stupid pop song. It just never interested me. When I did listen to a song, I primarily focused on the instruments and beat of the song. That being said the first type of music I listened to and enjoyed was classical. There was nothing but instruments and no vocals to get in the way. Just pure - awesome sound. The first time I heard techno I knew it was my genre. My college roommate had a huge library of songs and I got hooked on Infected Mushroom. Not my favorite artist now but it was something that really turned me onto the genre. It just made sense to me. Then I heard the first drop and I was sold.
