Lafell: separation and getting open?

If I was Cam I would be re thinking that Olsen idea...he has dropped what...5 passes already?

He also drops like a ton of bricks upon even the most modest of contact.

I would be looking for Ginn more, if anything.

BTW the idea that Lafell can't get open is a myth...always was.

Its not about LaFell being open, its about him completing the catch or route. If you are not in the right spot or if you are not making the tough grabs and someone else is your not doing your job.

a couple of things, don't read too much into the smitty thing he always does that when he's open, he also celebrated the touchdown once lafell caught it no biggy. When a Qb and WR are on the same page like smith and cam are you'll see that alot, we use to do this in HS, Randy Moss use to do it alot with Tom Brady. Just a way of letting the qb know you have 1 on 1 without safety help(only for deep routes)

another thing Lafell is inconsistent, that was a lazy comeback route you could tell because it look like a out route and usually on a comeback........well you comeback to the ball. Cam is at fault too ball was thrown late. Also our Wr need to attack the ball more often, quit waiting for it to be perfectly thrown in your bread basket and go make a play.  Now i'm not faulting Lafell completely  because it did most likely appear from his angle Cam was being sack, but he should know by now never to count Cam out.

Fox showed a replay of the first Lafell TD but zoomed in on Smitty. Smith threw his arms up in the air because he beat his man and didn't get the ball. Even after Lafell caught the TD, smith just turned to the bench with his arms up giving the impression he was mad he didn't get the ball. Even my dad (not a panthers fan, just enjoys watching football) was like "what's he so mad about"?

I could see Cam feeling the need to press and get the ball to Smith to make him happy. Some of you may roast me for this because I'm kind of making an assumption but go back and watch after the first Lafell TD and tell me what you think.

when guys get touchdowns sometimes other guys raise both hands in the air to emulate the referee's signal for a touchdown. it generally is part of team spirit and the general hullabaloo that follows a touchdown by a bunch of guys who like each other.

please don't post any criticisms of players jumping at each other in the end zone because they're trying to hurt each other without considering the aforementioned information.

I think it looked like he was somewhat mad, but it could have been the TD symbol, in fact i meant to re watch the game and look for that. but it did look like he was hoping to get the ball. ill re watch later to see what i think.

Like Michael Jackson sang, "You are not Alone".  That is why I was so mad last week when Smitty said he was pressing.  I was like dude, he is pressing to get you the ball.  Steve lobbies for the ball all the time.  I remember an NFL production video last year where he was yelling at the bench "throw the f*cking ball" after Cam missed him.  Cam was fifty yards away and he was yelling so all the players, fans, could hear him.  I thought that was very toxic and yesterday, that was a toxic me-first reaction on the Lafell touchdown.  We all know Smith has his foul moments and he has his great leadership moments.  Lafell has got game.

After the interception(which I put on Lafell), Smitty put a clinic on how to run timing routes properly.  Lafell still needs work.

The fade to Smitty in the end zone.....how about we quit that Shula.

That is a very tough play IMO for the QB and WR.....and is a very high risk play. Smith isn't Megatron. Yes, he has hops but 89 isn't the 2005 guy anymore....he is human.

I hated that play. I think some of it may be be coaching simply asking Smith to carry this WR corp too often.

He should have ran that route better.  If he does then its pass interference cause Ross has to hit him harly to stop the pass.  He does have room to grow and I hate his big drops like the KC game last year.

i doubt Cam would have thrown that ball if he didnt have so much pressure in his face, because Ross never turned his back to Cam.  That route works beautifully when the defender starts running with the WR, we saw it work twice to Smitty in the second quarter.  Everybody has drops, can't be too mad about occasional ones, but not running a route hard is something to get mad about.

He definitely wanted to get Smith involved, and him having a one-on-one matchup generally is in our favor.  It was played well by the defender and Cam made a safe throw that could not be picked off.  But yea, not too many 5'9" guys run the fade routes in the end zone for jump balls nowadays.
