David Newton has still got Rivera's back on that 4th and 1

Was it the right call?  Yes, if you are going by the book!  Going by the freaking book has gotten us 4 winning seasons in 18!  ARE YOU KIDDING ME!  We are weak, our play calling is lame, and our metal is soft!   YOU HAVE TO GO FOR THE WIN by getting the first down!!!!!!!!    There is no other question here!

That's because there are no NFL coaches posting here.

The vast majority of them would have made the exact same decision.

doesn't mean that it was the right call.

again, you look at the situation as is  and look at both options and the results of similar decisions made by this coach and it's hard to justify sticking with "textbook" solutions for that situation.

Has nothing to do with what any coach said. It's quite simple. If you go for it on fourth down or hell even go for the first down on third down your playing to win because at that point a first down wins the game. Or you can kick a field goal and try to prevent the other team from wining the game. at that point your out there just trying not to lose it because you gave them the ball and a shot to win the game. You let them get off the mat and they knocked your ass out.

I love when people think coaches that gamble more are the only ones "playing to win"

There are plenty of coaches that go for it on 4th and short who wind up losing.

There are plenty of coaches who go for the field goal who wind up winning.

NFL coaches have a saying: "Don't take points off the board."  That's what you do when you don't go for the field goal.  And then when the other team does kick the field goal and beats you by 1 or 2 because you didn't get the points, you look like an idiot.

Fans always want the coach to go for it, but that's why they're fans, not coaches.

I did.

The right call still would have been to take the points.  Go for it and fail and all Buffalo needs is a field goal to tie.

Take the points and you force them to have to go for a touchdown.  You then count on your defense to hold them.

I know Rivera is not a good head coach, but that doesn't mean every single decision he makes is wrong.

This one was right.

You don't take points of the board true but this is the end of the game. I actually have more of an issue with the play call on 3rd down than 4th down. They weren't interested in getting the first down to win the game. How the hell will we know if we have a franchise quarterback that can make THE plays to win the game if we don't allow him to try. It goes back to third down. Put the ball in your best playmaker's hands and let him win the game for you. He's never going to win us a game standing on the sideline. You say most coaches wouldn't have went for it on 4th down but ask yourself what would they have done on 3rd?

Mr. Scot - use all the logic and "NFL coaches know their stuff and we don't know jack malarky" as much as you want but i win with this statement...

If we go for it on 4th and 1 last week we win.  We didn't and we lost!  It was the wrong call!

It is easy for a fan. Sitting on his/her azz. To say go for it. They have nothing riding on the outcome.

Coaches. Who's livelihood depends on wins. Have a poo ton more riding on these decisions. And a vast majority of those coaches would have done the same thing Rivera did in that scenario.

If we were winning more. Most fans would be behind Rivera. But because we are losing more, the fans think they know more.

Man...I love your guys.

They put the ball in the playmaker's hands on a critical 4th and 1 last year and had it blow up in their face.

That's not to say they should never try it again mind you, but people act like that's a guaranteed first down.  It's not, especially not behind the OL we have now.

And you know for absolute certainty that we would have made it without getting stuffed, right?

You have zero doubts that our OL would have gotten enough push to make it?

Do me a favor and look up our 3rd down conversion rate for that game.  Was it over 50%?

How many tackles for loss were there against us?

Remember a 4th down conversion attempt against Atlanta last year?  How's that go?

This notion that going for it would have guaranteed a win is just ridiculous.

That's just as silly.

Kuechly doesn't have his hand in the wrong spot on the interception play...we win.

Josh Norman doesn't act like a blithering idiot on the final play...we win.

Any number of other options for someone on defense to make a play happens...we win.

That play guaranteed nothing.

There is no fuging way you can convince me that depending on a hurt secondary where you can't play a true nickle or dime (because you have a LB covering WR) is a good idea.

How about this people.

Could RON for once put some faith in his offense and young QB??????

How the fug do you build confidence in your young QB (helping him build leadership) if you constantly take the ball out of his hands when it's winning time???

Again he showed more faith in a broken secondary and a defense that wasn't getting much pressure all day.
