Greg Cosell: Cam has no consistency

You don't have the most passing yards of any qb in their first two years by not knowing how to throw the damn football.

Eli has easily been one of the worst qbs this season but you don't hear poo about it.

You know who else had a lot of passing yards in games and still couldn't come out with the wins?

I've worried in the past about Newton becoming a victim of the 'David Carr Effect'.

Whatever potential Carr had to be a great quarterback was largely beaten out of him because 1) the Texans did a horrible job developing him 2) playing behind a bad offensive line effectively erased whatever progress he'd had by reinforcing the bad habits he'd revert to when he was under constant pressure and 3) too much was asked of him too soon.

There comes a point where he's not just hurting now, but actually ruined for the long term.

I don't want to see us reach that point :(

I don't think that'll ever be the case and I don't think Carr was ruined.  He was just a mediocre to bad QB that was drafted way too high.

I think Cam can handle the pressure.  He just needs to be himself.  We need to win games based on his skill set and not force a style of play on him.  If his skill set expands then we change things up.

I think having Rivera and Gettleman focus on defense and not offense in the past draft have pushed cam beyond that point. Hope I'm wrong, but three seasons with a sub par Wr group and a shitty oline while being hit more then any other qb in the nfl over that time period will do that to you.

Carr was definitely ruined, his mechanics fell apart after he got behind that terrible oline in Houston. He was never able to recover. cam had issues to work on mechanics wise and his oline isn't giving him the time consistently to get into a rythm mechanics wise. On top of that Rivera, Gettleman and Shula are trying to make him a pocket qb that manages games.

Cam isn't a pocket qb that manages games, he's a gunslinger that can scramble an run the ball with power. Those elements need to be embraced by the front office and coaching staff, not bottled up and ignored.

This might be the best analysis of Cam's game right now.  Completely agree.  I've seen it mentioned here and other places that Cam might not fit what Gettlemen wants as a QB, that is tough to consider but I'd love to see Cam successful and in an organization that supports and fosters his growth.

Don't think he gets that here.  He is with an organization that wants him to change into something he is not rather than change into something that is simply better and more refined.

Well he's right but that stuff comes in time.  One thing does concern me though, his best play came in his first year with barely any offseason to prepare.  If anything it points to the coaches making him worse(though it's impossible to tell at this point).

Somebody on this very board told me that once teams have enough tape to study on EJ Manuel his game is going to ( sic) go to hell.  Same may have happened with Newton, though I have said repeatedly on this forum that I believe Newtons biggest problem is having coaches who know how to use him effectively.

I know every squirrel wants a nut but you won't get yours off of my tree. I didn't say Cam had a lot of passing yards. I said he had more in his first two years than any qb in NFL history had in their first two years. See the difference in significance? Good. Now go away

Nah don't see the difference I'm staying.
