Greg Cosell: Cam has no consistency

Cary Kollins

Recommended Posts

I'm rooting for Cam as much as the next guy, but its his third season in the nfl and he's still throwing the ball 5 yards too high on a simple routes. Personally, I see 2 problems, that coaches AND he need to fix. 1. Footwork/mechanics. He doesn't use his legs in the pocket as much as he should. 2. Confidence. Never thought id say this but the kid just looks ... blah on the field, for a better term. I don't know what it can take, or if he can. I'm hoping he can, but I just don't know. There are a lot worse receiving cores in the NFL thatre doing just fine, Cam needs to do the little things better.

I don't think Cam will ever be the type of QB who sits in the pocket and picks apart defenses. That's not his game, nor should it be. If we're trying to make him into that, it's a bad idea. I've said for 3 years that the best fit for Cam is an offense similar to what Ben Roethlisberger ran early in his career, only with more scrambling.

My biggest worry with Cam is that his contract will have expired before we have a coaching staff that can figure out what sort of offense he needs to be running.

our offense has no consistency yet we blame Cam for everything. the seahawks, 49ers, or the redskins would trade their QBs for Cam in a heartbeat. its not Cams fault our offense is like watching a monkey try build a nuclear weapon.

I doubt that very seriously

Hmm

Where have I heard this before.

Oh yea. I said it.

Still plenty of knuckleheads wanna blame coaches. Sure coaches aren't the best. But when mechanics, vision, accuracy, and decision-making are still as poor or maybe even worse than they were three years ago the lights need to start to come on in some of you homers. You know. That light that has yet to come on in Cam.

I know it's depressing to think it just might be another bad draft choice in a long line of them. But hey. Just say what JR would say. " what's one more?"

If you saw the post a couple of weeks ago Cosell said one of Cams problems is he uses his  arm only versus his core and arm together.I agree with what Cosell says but it is also true that Cam does not have the supporting staff that Wilson and Kaperdick and that includes coaches ,OL, and receivers.

.I  believe there is a timing issue with Cam and some of his receivers and timing is critical to throwing the ball accurately . Why we ever abandoned the 2 TE set I will never know. Cam likes a receiver that he is confident that will use his body to fight for the ball.I thought Antwan Boldin would have been a perfect WR receiver for Cams style.

The bigger issue that I see is when Rivera is fired will Cam go with him or just behind him. Right, wrong, or indifferent Gettlemen will be on the clock when Rivera goes and does not seem like the kind of GM that believes he needs to change schemes to accommodate his QB ...more like the other way around.

After reviewing the first two weeks' game tape, here is what Cosell had to say. It ain't good.

I think this speaks to the quality of his coaches, because I don't think anyone questions Cam's work ethic or desire to improve.

I agree with you.

I believe everyone sees the problem. U don't take away the strength of your QB. You build on it.

Cam isn't going anywhere. JR isn't going to allow that.

If Gettleman didn't feel he could win with him at QB, he wouldn't have made it past the interview stage.

Quit acting like you have some crystal ball.....it makes you seem like a know it all . The fact is I do not have a crystal ball and neither do you.

Cam had a 70% completion rating against Seattle, and I believe I read that it was over 80% if you exclude drops.

Might wanna check your math.

This is what I do not understand about the accuracy comments. He played very safe against Seattle and had mostly check downs and short passes. He played well and was very consistent and accurate.

Against Buffalo he was all over the place and thought pressure was there when there wasn't. I agree he wasn't consistent or accurate. He threw with very little success a lot of deep balls.

But after such a small sample size this season (2 games!) how can we bash Cam for accuracy or consistency when this seems to be the epidemic around the whole league! Oh wait it's not an epidemic its only two games!

Now the only reason we talk about Cam is that we are losing. If our defense found a way to win Buffalo for us, or Rivera would have gone for it on 4th down and we could have closed out the game, or Deangelo wouldn't have fumbled. Would we be talking about Cam's consistency/accuracy or how now he is becoming the "winner" we all want

Why does Cam get a pass from 90% of this forum? Is it because we don't want to believe he might not be a franchise QB?

This is an objective analysis not based in emotion or veiled racism like so many members of the national media.

I have concerns about him. It's year 3 and he still hasn't shown the ability to be a game breaking player. Yes he can make amazing plays on occasion due to freakish athletic ability but guys like Rodgers, Brady and Manning can simply take over a game regardless of how well a defense is playing. Too often Cam will disappear for long stretches of a game or even many consecutive games before he reappears.

I think the verdict is still out on him. I'm not convinced he's the QB to lead us into the future yet. I don't think gettleman is either.
