Panthers 2014 Free Agents

Derek Anderson QB UFA Panthers TBD -- Could count as 555k cap hit (actually recieves ~840k) with a vet discount so why not, he's 30yo

Colin Cole DT UFA Panthers TBD -- same as DA, he's 33yo now so he's not going to count more than 555k against the cap. why not?

Graham Gano K UFA Panthers TBD -- def a keeper (1.8M - 2.5M first year contract cap hit)

Ted Ginn Jr. WR UFA Panthers TBD -- a keeper, not sure what he would command (2M-3M hopefully?)

Jordan Gross LT, T UFA Panthers TBD -- Corey Joel mentioned you could lift the void from his contract for this coming year (he would earn $3M, 1M is from his salary, 2M is from a 2014 roster bonus). This would pay him well and for 2014 his cap impact would only move up from 5.6M (this is taken even if he doesn't come back) to 5.9M (he gets paid 3M, we only increase our cap 300k).

Captain Munnerlyn CB UFA Panthers TBD -- depends on the price, and the fan. love him or hate him he's still valuable

Richie Brockel FB RFA Panthers TBD -- 27yo. Small portion of our offense. Another 1 year deal of 555k if he's desired (UDFA Zordich from 13' is waiting in the wings for only 496k)

Ben Hartsock TE UFA Panthers TBD -- probably another year at 620k (actually recieves about 900K, but we benefite with the vet discount

Mike Mitchell S UFA Panthers TBD-- made 725k this year. backload a contract and start his cap hit small for these next 2 years (2-3M hit in 14

Jeff Byers C RFA Panthers TBD -- The team likes him as depth, minimum salary either way. 700-900k hit

Greg Hardy DE UFA Panthers TBD -- the elephant in the room. it comes down to can we afford him in our 3 and 5 year cap plan that DG spoke of. if it works out with an extension then it would have to be back loaded. restructures with kalil, oslen and big$ will free up more cap space to perhaps get a deal done, but I'm just not sure and of course he is the most debatable FA right now for us.

Brandon LaFell WR RFA Panthers TBD -- likely costs us a 2M cap hit this year if brought back

Quintin Mikell S UFA Panthers TBD -- Solid contributing vet, had a good year. Look what happened when he came out vs SF and Lester came in. Vet discount for us, he'd likely hit our cap at 650k and you can't go wrong at what he brings us at that price

Chris Scott G RFA Panthers TBD -- another league minimum guy. sign him now and let him compete in TC. 600-800K hit

Jordan Senn OLB, LB UFA Panthers TBD -- Colin Jones seemed to be a bigger impact guy on ST's but he is another Vet Discount guy, so at 620k cap hit, why not bring back our Special Teams caption?

Travelle Wharton G UFA Panthers TBD -- He's 32yo, and we have KGB and Silatolu (maybe even Garry Williams) coming back fom injury. I'm not sure what his future is, but hopefully we can get him on a 620k (where he makes around 900k) Vets Discount.

Bruce Campbell RT, T UFA Panthers TBD -- we traded for him.. i think he'll be signed for TC at a minimum salary unless his injuries are something the club wants to stay away from.

Jimmy Clausen QB UFA Panthers TBD -- who?

James Dockery CB UFA Panthers TBD -- league minimum salary, battle in TC.

Armanti Edwards WR RFA Panthers TBD -- who?

Brian Folkerts C ERFA Panthers TBD -- they liked this guy enough to keep him around all year, pretty sure he's get a league min and we'll see him in TC

Darvin Adams WR RFA Panthers TBD -- Joey? TC would be his only shot, don't think he's given a call

D.J. Moore CB UFA Panthers TBD -- not sure what's up with him, TC would be my guess.

Jon Beason OLB, LB UFA Panthers TBD --

Garry Williams G RFA Panthers TBD -- they've liked him this long, and enough to declare him the starter at the beginning of the year. he comes in a league minimum and depth at RT and RG

Byron Bell RT, T RFA Panthers TBD -- costs little as a backup. I know he sucks but we need 53 contracts on the books and why not take someone who's been around for 4 years as a last resort player assuming we can't get someone in FA or in the draft. get him for this year.. i know we want pro bowl linemen at every spot NOW but it won't happen in 1 year

Domenik Hixon WR UFA Panthers TBD -- would probably cost us around that 1.2M range again. i'm just not sure since we didn't see a whole lot out of him as a #3.

Awesome analysis, the main question really is can we make those signing, retain the Kraken, and resign Cam before his rookie contract runs out?

I don't think we're interested in bringing back Colin Cole and Ben Hartsock. We have younger and cheaper replacements already on the roster. DT Linden Gaydosh would slide into the 4th DT spot and DC Jefferson is a big slow blocking TE, same as Hartsock.

Read from an interesting article a few weeks ago to what we are probably going to do:

Resign Cam this off season, we can't afford to option him and don't want to risk waiting until his contract has expired at the end of next year. We sign him to a contract that is light this year and next at around 3M guaranteed but give him a huge signing bonus that we can amortize across 10 years or so. So essentially he would make more money the next two years than his guaranteed with that signing bonus but we get I save on the cap space. This would save us 3-4M in cap space this year and we have a resigned Cam.

Restructure to free up another 5-8M. Frankly the players know the situation and have all talked about how they all want to stay together, use that along with some under performed players to restructure and free up some more.

All of a sudden our 20M looks more like 30M for next year. Beason's Dead money expires next year so most of that will be used to resign Keech. We have Cam resigned and a plan for Keech.

Resign the bold players or those similar for 16M

5M for the draft

You are left with 5-9M to sign the other 5-10 players in FA

The problem is we are left with a lot of 1 year deals like we are this year but 90% of the team is back, but I think we are looking at 10-15 1 yr players instead on 21 and we have Cam resigned.

The cap hit versus these people is so tiny. I'm fine with signing and letting them battle it out in TC, but those other 2 aren't proven and ready to go yet, especially at a 200k cap hit difference.

You don't truly appreciate how dumb most Huddlers are until the offseason comes around.

"guys guys guys why resign Wharton when weve got garry friggin williams, save the money from that and then trade lafell for a great player, and then yeah i mean what is so difficult about all this"
