Ron Rivera: Norv Turner Clone?

MHS831

Recommended Posts

During his years as a DC in San Diego, the Chargers had one of the best defenses in the NFL, along with one of the best offenses.  Super Bowl? Playoff domination?  Nope.  Underachievement.  Norv Turner was often criticized by the same terminology used to describe Rivera.  Here is what they did together--see a pattern?

2008 Chargers were 4-8 and won the last 4 to finish 8-8 and make the playoffs.

2009 Chargers were 2-3 and won the last 11 games to finish 13-3. Upset in playoffs

2010 Chargers were 2-5 and then went 7-2 to finish the year at 9-7. Incredible underachievement

Now lets take a look at what you already know, the Panther record over the past 2+ seasons, under RR's guidance:

2011 Panthers start season 2-8, win 4 of 6 to finish the season at 6-10.

2012 Panthers start season 2-8, win 5 of 6 to finish the season 7-9.

2013 Panthers start season 0-2......

Did we get the Hispanic version of Norv Turner?  Same dermatologist, same philosophy.

Yea it's more like a fusion of mike singletary's own ineptitude minus the pants dropping and the panthers' intrinsic capability to win games only when they're already or very close to being mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, but I can see how you could get that confused with Norv's late season surging.

I think Rivera is more of a Mike Singletary.....

Now hopefully we can find our Jim Harbaugh

I see your point, but I am referring to the person who may have influenced Rivera by working with him.  Rivera was widely known to be seeking a head coaching job when in SD, so he was probably learning under Norv.

It is no secret that Norv was a tremendous underachiever in SD, and if RR wanted to become a head coach, he would be watching and learning.  That is how people develop their philosophies toward the game.  Rivera does not have the attack gene in him--he thinks it is "desperation."

There are some idiots (FB) who learn all they know about football from EA Sports, and they will have difficulty comprehending not only the English language but the dynamics of football's apprenticeship.  See how many head coaches were understudies of the top coaches in football and you see that their philosophies about the game were forged by the head coach at the time.  Rivera studied under Norv Turner when he was auditioning.  The patterns are similar because their approach to football is similar.

Well at least Norv has actually had a winning season.

Give that team to a Harbaugh, Parcells, or Cowher, they win the super bowl going away,  They had the #1 rated defense and the #1 rated offense in the NFL that season.  How do you NOT win the super bowl?

This team has all the pieces to at least be competitive, it boggles the mind how we continue to get beaten by crappy teams year in year out. The only reason the Bills won is because their D-Line is nasty. If they traded D-Lines with, say, Atlanta? We win, hands down. That's still no excuse. This team has the talent already on the roster to play competitively. Yes the O-Line is terrible, yes the receivers leave much to be desired, yes the secondary is a basket case. But ALL teams have holes. The good teams learn to cope with those holes.

Too bad Norv Turner has never been DC. Kind of destroys the whole comparison.

Nobody was learning DC from Norv and it makes no difference what RR was at the time--Rivera was learning HC from Norv.

Please tell me that point did not escape you.

    • It must be an early Christmas for JT O'Sullivan having Thielen back so he could put a coal in Thielen's stocking every chance he gets.  Honestly, the biggest surprise is not so much the anticipation. There were those moments here and there last year as well. It's that even that one positive quality he had seemingly vanished his first two games to where it looked like it was all but over, only for it to start coming back some until you get exclamation points all over this game film. And some of those throws were under a lot of duress, something I feel is something new. Finally, those deeper shots are starting to land. Not all of them, but enough that defenses may have to start respecting them. No guarantees whether this will end up as more of anomaly but I certainly hope it isn't. The Green Bay game was a sampler of what BY could be. Against KC, we got a meal. If we could start getting these meals regularly, we might actually have something to work with here.

    • Heels let another team go up 20 on them but this time they complete the comeback. HD never seems to have his team ready but he makes great halftime adjustments. Powell played the majority of the second half and his defense was the difference along with his big three pointer to give the Heels the lead for good. Trimble and Davis were also spectacular. Carolina can’t let Auburn get out to a 20 point lead though, they won’t be able to come back from that.
