The Coaching Staff Installed Second Half Plays to Try to Win it

It was pretty obvious  that the deangelo williams wildcat plays were an attempt by the coaching staff to mix things up in the second half, in hopes that the bills' defense would be caught off guard enough to put enough points on the board to win it.

The trouble is, the Bills would have already been prepared to stop it, if they prepared to stop Cam's read option.  Running wildcat instead simply makes it easier to stop, because there is no threat of deangelo throwing the ball out of the formation.

Instead, the coaching staff telegraphed these run plays to the defense, and took Cam out of the offense completely.  The Bills had little trouble containing it.

Is this the best Shula can do, wrinkle-wise?

Do you think the players are still happy with a "simplified" offense?  Or is it finally sinking in that simpler offense = simpler to defend?

Simple offenses work in one situation: When you are so dominant on the offensive line that the defense knows what is coming, but still cannot stop it.

Look at college ball as an example:  Alabama runs an incredibly simple offense.  Because they have the raw talent up front to impose their will on any defense.  Teams without this luxury are almost always the ones with gimmicky offenses.

We need to acknowledge that Cam is not a pocket passer behind a line that isn't consistent enough  to pick up 5-6 rushers on a regular basis.  At a minimum, we need more designed roll outs, more read option runs to cam, and more throws out of the read option.

Are you listening Shula?

Second half adjustments are a problem but it's not the reason we keep losing these close games. It's really not. We are losing because of Rivera's situational playcalling. The 4th and 1's etc that he doesn't have the balls to go for when we need to.

He has no feel for momentum at all.

Shula listened last week, but what he got out of it was "be more aggressive" and decided that meant running plays that took ages to develop down field, regardless of the ability of our line to block their guys.

I estimate he will read this thread and decide to run the read option every single play.

Second half adjustments have been an issue with this team for a lot longer than Rivera has been head coach.

That being said, Ron Rivera is nothing more or better than John Fox v2.0.

I'd be curious to see a breakdown of how many deep attempts came from under center vs shotgun.

I think the answer is that far more came from behind center this week, which puts cam at a severe disadvantage behind this line.

note below that Williams had 0 catches in the game.  Throwing to the RB has been something this team has refused to do for some reason for as long as I can remember.  Not sure why we can't make a decent screen pass, or throw to the flat.  It's as though JR has mandated that we're only allowed to run plays designed back when he played.

and then our 2min offense was fast and efficient...so we had to go back to long passes, and runs up the middle for the second half.  Oy.

Hell no he isn't. That asshole is so conservative, the only way to get his attention on the internet is to post in an AOL chatroom,

    • I like that a lot; Ware from Troy and also Khalil Mack who played at University of Buffalo
    • I remember the Huddle consensus over the course of last season and the previous one. Lots of Bryce is a bust, we should've drafted a 4th slot WR, should've kept Wilks, should've kept an armless Cam, etc etc. So... yea... already thought about that. I wouldn't trust the Huddle to detail my car, let alone run a multi-billion dollar professional sports team. 😛
    • bold prediction, I think Mike Green will be the best pass rusher in this class, and thats even with abdul carter.  He reminds me of demarcus ware, not just in size and prowess, but even coming from a Sunbelt school (Ware from Troy, Green from Marshall).  I think he is passionate about the sport where I think Carter as the physical freak might not have the heart.  Thats the guy Im sold on and am gonna hammer the table for, I know he's not projected 8, but he is projected like 12-13, so if a slide back can happen and we still get the guy I want, I'm 100% on board. All that said, it takes 2 to tango, I think the Cowboys are the tango-er.  IMO theres a VERY good shot that Jeanty is available at 8.  Why does that matter?  Not only do the cowboys NEED a runningback (dak sucks without a run game), but MORE importantly, gee where did Jeanty play in high school.....Frisco TX, literally Dallas Metro.  Soo, RB is a position of need and the best RB and most blue chip draft selection that  could improve the offense immensly played IN dallas metro AND will be in range for them to move up and pick?  Do ya think Jerry Jones is gonna just say no to the Jersey Sales?  Jerry might have sexually assaulted a woman and attempted to prevent black people from going to school, but he's no idiot (he is).  IMO, we get a good enough package, prlly their first and third,  maybe a conditional later and we move to 12.  We get Green, they get Jeanty, everbuddy happy.
