Charles Johnson restructures contract -saves $4.26 Million (old thread bumped)

I took a look at the details. It looks like we save over 4.2 mil this year, then add on 1.4 mil in 2014 and 1.4 mil in 2015.

It LOOKS like we spread some of it around yet still save money overall.

CJ probably wins by ensuring he's here at least one more year. (2014 has him at 16mil cap hit or we release him for a 16mil hit, thus little advantage to releasing him)

With the salary cap rollover that would net us an extra $2.8M in cap room next year. More flexibility to sign, cut, and trade.

Agreed.

I took a look at next years FA and our cap as well. Assuming we cut Godfrey (7mil a year aint happening), we actually have enough to resign everyone smartly, and give Hardy 10 mil a year. (IMO and assuming we are about 20mil under the cap now)

I hope he squeezes another 10 mil out of people for FA signings such as DB, O line and WR (whichever positions are not filled with the draft)

I think in 2-3 more year we will be past this Hurney cap crap hole and we will see what Gettle really can do.

To keep him away from the Raiders? Gtfo with that poo.

Huh?!?  My point was why let him hit FA where the Panthers will get into a bidding war with *insert team*  There's nothing positive that will come out of that situation for Carolina.

If Cam isn't the guy, I believe it's time for the Panthers to move on.

You disagree?  Why?

The only scenario where this makes sense in my head is that we are planning on trading CJ......  Why else would we cut his salary down this year? We currently have almost 8 million in cap room.  I doubt there is a veteran player on the market seeking more than that.

I can dream, but how great would it be to trade CJ to the 49ers for Greg Roman and some of those draft picks (they have 6 in the first 3 rounds).

Not reasonable.  We just converted salary to signing bonus.  You don't trade guaranteed signing bonus money.  We're on the hook for that whether he is here or not.

If we were looking to trade CJ to a team with limited cap room, taking the financial hit ourselves through a signing bonus would make sense.

The problem would occur when the rest of the guaranteed money accelerates spread over this year and next years cap.

If we're saving money this season, but not bringing anyone in...and we're not saving any money to bring anyone in for next season, then this is the FO saying that they are giving up on this year and trying to save some $$ for the bottom line.  Saving money for one season, but not using it, is not a football move, it's a business move.

If we don't see any roster action this week, then I guess we have our answer.

This IMO is worst case scenario.

I take that back, bringing in T3bow is worse case scenario.
