Charles Johnson restructures contract -saves $4.26 Million (old thread bumped)

CJ's contract is retarded, they really should force him to take a straight paycut and not only this year but get his cap hit manageable for the entire length of the contract so that we can actually keep him here long term.

This move doesn't do any of that. He's not taking a paycut. He's making the exact same amount of money. And actually now he has MORE guaranteed money, we are making his future cap hits even bigger while also making the dead money cap hit if we cut him even larger.

All in all, it's either a neutral move or a bad one, considering on how things plays out. There's no scenario where this is a positive move.

I have to ask..If you're still a few seasons away, what are you going to do about Cam?

If he's not the answer and it's time to move on, do you draft his replacement or look to FA.

Conversely, if he plays well and hits FA, Carolina will have to over-pay (ala Johnson) to keep him away from teams like the Raiders and Dolphins.

I'm sorry, this isn't looking good for the Panthers faithful

To keep him away from the Raiders? Gtfo with that poo.

The hindsight faux outrage in here is amazing.  You guys didn't know CJ was overpaid?  Good grief.  Same as DWill, heard of that contract? Anyway.

Look for a CB or OL who has a pretty high cap number to come here in a trade, hopefully for Beason.  (first part serious, second part wishful thinking)

"converting his remaining base salary into a prorated bonus"

I took a look at the details. It looks like we save over 4.2 mil this year, then add on 1.4 mil in 2014 and 1.4 mil in 2015.

It LOOKS like we spread some of it around yet still save money overall.

CJ probably wins by ensuring he's here at least one more year. (2014 has him at 16mil cap hit or we release him for a 16mil hit, thus little advantage to releasing him)
