Cam Newton contract extension?

It amazes me to see Harbaugh turn Kaepernick into 'The Greatest QB in the making..." (via Jaws and ESPN) yet Rivera and Shula don't know how to find exploit his gifts.

John is just that good. He made Alex smith a winner. From what I saw Shula has developed Can 0% as of now.

This is amazing to follow as an outsider.  I think you can't put an extension on the table until December at the earliest. Of course, I have a sour taste in my mouth from Ryan Fitzpatrick...

 

I think Newton needs to show the baby before bringing home the new shoes.  Of course, the Carolina FO has done next to nothing to line up a plan-B if Newton is not going to be the QB in 2014.

I want to see Cam behind center for the Panthers for the next 10+ years.

 

That said, I wouldn´t do an extension at the end of this year. The reason? Any offer we make to Cam now based off the current situation will be way below what the top QB´s make. If he plays the way he is capable, especially under a good offensive mind in any post-Rivera scenario, he is going to be unhappy with a below market contract and his agent will push for re-negotiation. Nobody wants a disgruntled QB, so chances are the team would re-do his deal once the results dictated it. 

 

So it´s not like we are going to get him on a bargain basement new 6 year deal and save lots of money. It is better to just let things play out. Put a better team and better coaching around him and let´s see what happens, then pay him accordingly.

Cam will get a good high dollar contract either way....His agent will say hey you didn't provide him with an OL help and what he's had one true WR his whole time here.....He'll a good contract with us, not a blow out like some of the elite QBs but it will be good....or he'll goto the Raiders and get top dollar and be surrounded by worse talent..
