McDermott is our only viable interim head coach candidate.

Definitely MCD over shula. I wouldn't mind Jim skipper for interim hc either. I realize he has almost no experience but the last time the panthers had any dominant unit it was his rb's in 08.

You know as weird as that sounds I wouldn't mind that either. We need a coach that isn't afraid to attack or make the tough decision to run a quarterback keeper on 4th and 1. I think Skipper or Proehl would bring that element to us until we find a real head coach.

Looking at New Orleans I now realize how important coaching is.  Saints are now 2-0 coming off a year with the worst defense in NFL history.  Wow.

Imagine what we would look like with Sean Payton or even, dare I say it, John Fox.

That's because Ron Rivera is not an NFL Caliber coach.

He's not even a bad NFL coach. He's much worse, as he's not NFL caliber to begin with.

I'm been saying this for three seasons.

This is exactly why Shula was promoted and someone like Hugh Jackson or Ken Whisenhunt wasn't hired. So that when Rivera inevitably poo'd the bed, there wan't a viable HC candidate among the assistants to take over for him in the interim.

If Rivera is fired, it won't happen until the Panthers are officially out of playoff contention.

The irony is, Rivera would get paid anyway.

So it shouldn't matter. Rivera's not going to get a head coaching gig for a while, if ever again.

McDermott is the only coach who has shown competency in his current coaching position.

If Rivera is fired, look for him to be promoted to interim head coach and for Steve Wilks to be promoted to DC.

Promoting Shula is not an option, as he hasn't been able to perform in a competent manner with only the offense to worry about. Giving him even more responsibility makes zero sense.

I wouldnt mind the Ginger taking over right now

Here me out before you kill me, but I'd offer the job to Shula before McD. First of all we don't know who was making what calls. I'm certain that Shula was calling the specific plays, but I feel like Rivera was most likely making the big picture calls (what type of plays to call). Shula has head coaching experience (college is better than nothing) and more overall experience.

If I was JR, I would have told Rivera to not bother coming in this morning and go to Shula and say, "well son (I picture JR calling everyone son) here's your chance. You're now an NFL interim head coach. You've got a giant mess here to fix and you'll most likely be fired in late December. However, if you can right this ship and take us to the playoffs, you'll have an opportunity to interview against the best available football minds to keep your job. Now prepare what you want to say in your first press conference about how you're going to turn this season around. Oh and Mike, you're hated on the huddle almost as much as Ron, so you better come up with something good to say."
