Cam's pocket presence

Some people who tend to put more blame on Cam than he really deserves will point out that he technically has a pocket for a few seconds. But we were running routes that take a long time to develop (a problem we had with Chud, too) and the line couldn't hold the pocket for long enough.

The same folks will retort that even the announcers pointed out that he had some open receivers, and that's true, but largely they're referring to the time Ginn was open on a short crossing route on 3rd and 11 and Cam got a first down on that play.

Cam by no means played a perfect, or really even decent game. But it all comes down to the o-line being asked to block for slow developing routes, and we simply don't have the talent for that. Both of our touchdown drives came in situations where we were calling quick passes in a hurry up offense, giving him time to hit a man before the pocket collapsed.

I agree with all this. even though it's implied i think it should be outright stated for those who may happen to read it and not make the connection that this is yet again another failing of the coaching staff

It looks worse because of Shula. I've follwed the guy for a long time (since he was OC at Tampa) and what you see is what you are going to get.  He was terrible then.  Tampa had the most vanilla, pathetic offense in the NFL and had mediocre results despite having a future Super Bowl winning qb at starter, a defense stacked full of future HOF's in Lynch, Brooks, Sapp, etc, a defensive genius as a HC in Dungy. Basically, Tampa finished almost dead last in the league in total yards every year that he was OC there and the starting QB was running for his life almost every game. Buffalo set a sack record today, and Shula was also the guy at Alabama that allowed his QB to get sacked ELEVEN TIMES in one game. Cam Newton is going to get killed this season.  I literally laughed out loud when I heard the Panthers had promoted Shula to OC.

This is what happens when you have a QB who's dynamic as hell but needs to be coached up in the NFL and we go out and get Mike Shula and Ken freaking Dorsey to do the job.

Rivera, Shula,...this whole staff just blows and from what we've seen so far, it looks like Cam's play is not going in the right direction. Not a good combo to have right now.

Why has his scrambling practically disappeared this year? We all thought he didn't do it in the preseason because the coaches didn't want him to get hurt when it didn't count. Now it counts and he just stands in the pocket while Bell is pushed back into his face. I don't get it.

Bc with Cam....you need designed runs.

He never been a QB that takes off quick. I have been complaining since his rookie season he sits too long too often waiting on someone to get open when he should his tuck and run.

My biggest concern at this point is Cam just doesn't look like he is having any fun. In the past, there were the "smiles" and the Superman poses but this year, even when it's a good play, his celebrations looks weak and half-assed. Before when he would get hit after a run, he would jump up with a big grin on his face but this year so far, it's either a scowl or nothing. He looks like a broken man out there right now. He certainly does not look confident.
