Is our problem coaching or talent?

The guy is a choke artist DC HC doesn't matter

Rivera DC vs Smittyless Delhomme

Rivera is a good D-Coordinator, but not a good HC.  In fact, the guy the Panthers let go 3-years ago was a much better HC than Rivera will ever be.

If we had tried for the first, we wouldn't have made it, and then Buffalo would have kicked a fg to tie and beaten us in overtime. Its just a losing mentaility, and we need to make changes to fix it.  Coaching is the easiest to make, and will probably have the most impact.

Fwiw, we had the same problem in the last two season of the Seifert reign.

Cam is certainly not the the issue here. As a coach and a offensive coordinator, you have to build confidence in your QB. Coming out gun-slinging in the first half and expect him to hit consistent deep balls is ridiculous. The offense must have a rhythm, you allow your quarterback to miss these throws and rock his boat. In addition, you don't establish a running game in the first half and expect the second half to be run-first. Our coaching is ELEMENTARY. The game is won before the ball is even snapped, there have to be reads and recognizing weaknesses of the opposing defence. It seems to me as if the play calls are random. There is no understanding of situational game awareness from this coaching staff. The pattern of play calling is ridiculous.

Lets look at the FINAL THREE DRIVES of the game.

3rd Quarter, 59 Seconds left on BUFFALO 16.

-Two straight wildcat plays, Cam Newton run to the left for a first down.

-Incomplete pass to Lafell, Run up the middle for no gain, Incomplete to Smith.

-FIELD GOAL

4th Quarter, 12:14 left on BUFFALO 26

-DeAngelo run up the middle, Incomplete to Lafell, 12 yard first down to Olsen.

-DeAngelo run up the middle, DeAngelo run to the left tackle, SACK,

-FIELD GOAL

4th Quarter, 7:13 left on CAROLINA 20

-15 Yard Strike to Olsen

-10 STRAIGHT RUN PLAYS TO BUFFALO 21.

-FOURTH AND ONE AND WE KICK A FIELD GOAL

15 RUN PLAYS TO 4 PASSING PLAYS

5 Plays in which Cam Newton is responsible for the ball.

Giving the ball on 3rd and four to a "tuck it and don't fumble" running back.

OUR COACHING STAFF HAS NO IDEA ABOUT PLAY PATTERNS AND SETTING UP DEFENCES. Elementary play calling, poor play calling situations and lack of awareness shows that this coaching staff is blind and have no clear identity or idea what playing football is about.

After a night to sleep on the issue, there are a couple of things I thought of which I'd love to see answered but never will.

1.  Why is Rivera scared to go big?  From the past two years (I give a waiver on year 1), we've continually "turtled" up when we have a lead in the 4th AND when we need a big play.  Why is that?  The majority of our arm-chair QBs/Coaches/GMs can attest that teams that fold like that don't win.  Why hasn't the lesson been learned?  As a long suffering fan (hey, I was there when the LA Rams busted us up in Clemson!), I'd much rather see us take a risk on 3-5 or 4-1 when we need a TD to put them down.  I can live with that loss because at least we tried.

2.  What is going to happen to Cam?  I'm with many of y'all, I love the kid, I want to root for him to become the franchise QB that we've dreamt about watching other teams pound us like so much flank steak.  I thought last year he really made some strides towards the end of the year.  I'm not sure what happened this year.  Rather, its hard to pin it down because there are so many different "things" it could be!  Cam is 24 years old?  Still a baby in the world, and still a young QB, but it seems like someone stole his "swag" (which is a word I despise but I'll give it to him).  Are we going to ruin him with more Rivera/Shula ball?  I want my arrogant Cam back, the pouter, whatever.  At least you could see him burning up on the field.  These two games, he's been too cool, too inside his own head.  This might be the most contentious idea here.

3.  Monstars Inc.  C'mon guys...  Really...  Greg Hardy talks a big game, and had a fantastic year last year, and I love his wild streak; but he and the rest of the D line need to be the starting point for us.  As much as Luke maybe the face of our D, the heart is that D line, and they have looked kind of sad.  A couple of good plays, then they get abused.  I want them to do well, I want them to set the pace.  I want the Kracken and the rest of those goofy nicknames to set the tone defensively in the first drive.  Knock down a pass, plant a QB, impose your will on an offense.  I love you guys, but with that back 4, we REALLY NEED THEM TO STEP UP.

To sum it up though, will we see this happen this year?  I mean, as much as some here might clamor that the players are playing not to get hurt, I doubt that.  What is the incentive if teams know that when the chips are down, you fold like a little flower?  You're not going to get another job, or you're not going to get paid what you think you're worth.  These guys need to play like they want jobs next year.  If the year continues to spiral out of control, which looks very evident here, Gettleman and new coach will gladly gut the roster and bring in guys who will compete and contribute.  Everyone better be playing for keeps from here on out.

TL:DR - Hope Cam survives and flourishes at some point, everyone needs to step up and prove to G-man they should play for new coach.

I believe our problem is coaching... I think we had the ball inside their 15 3 times yesterday (twice off turnovers) and only come up with 9 points?   We gotta do better than that... No read option for Cam? Cam is a weapon... Use him as one... Its ridiculous.  I believe if Chud was still the OC we would be 2-0 and not 0-2....

You HAVE to start with coaching.

Game plans, teams prepardeness, desire to win, mental errors.  I put all this on coaches.

Yes, we have guys that can play and we have guys whose time has come and gone, and we have guys who think they are better than they really are, but it you have to have a plan and that is not the players responsibility

Coaching, plain and simple.

This team has as much talent as the 2003 team did.  The 2003 would have been 2-0 after these 2 games.

The 2003 was not as talented as the 2005 or 2006 team.  They just had the right coaching and team chemistry to win.

This team doesn't lack talent.  Talent is way overblown anyway.  Every NFL team has talent.  The difference in talent from one team to the next is not as big as the media sometimes makes it out to be.

The only Panthers team that did not have the talent to compete was the 2010 team.  Even the 2001 team had enough talent to be a lot better than they were.

To the OP

Its' obviously COACHING. Cause if it was talent, the team would be blown out and not in games, instead of always finding ways to lose games in the closing minutes.

Of course the team could use more talent. But they've been in more than enough games to win, where the coaching staff (offense, defense and special teams) has blown too many.

Rivera needs to go by today!!

The players like Rivera and they blame  them selves for not closing out games. that they are not executing the plays called. I think that we cant go from playing well to really bad just cause the its the last drive. But we should take the players opinion in to account.

    • He's turned into quite a gunslinger
    • Hey guys, remember when we won those meaningless games in 2010 and it cost us the #1 pick and the chance to draft Cam? Oh.... right I get that's more of an extreme example because it got us a HOF caliber QB.  But it's the general concept, you want to win late season games when you have the pieces in place to make a run the next season, we currently are not in that place. Herbert and Sewell are the ones I point to so much, because we literally lost out on 2 franchise different makers by 1 draft slot.  Give us those two players while we still have CMC, Moore, and the rest of the picks we gave up for Bryce, and we'd have been a legit playoff contender the last few years. Draft position matters in the NFL more than any other sport (other than the #1 pick in the NBA in a year with a generational talent).
    • It’s so crazy. If we had a shot for pick 1 and there was some generational player there then yeah maybe I could get behind the draft position argument. I’d say most GMs and coaches aren’t diving into the draft right now. They are trying to win games.
