Say what?? Your kidding right. Because if your not then GTFO. Saban be came the Fins HC some years back and then quit and ran back to the college football ranks. The guy failed at been a HC in the NFL. No thanks.

 

People said the same thing about Pete Carroll.  How is he doing?

All of these are good choices, but I'll also go ahead and throw in Chris Petersen too.  He gets the best out of his players (he doesn't get the best recruits either) and we know for sure that he has some balls (see Boise State vs Oklahoma game).  Also, what about Pete Carmichael?

Over 30 years of coaching experience, about 20 of it being in the NFL...

Ran what was consistently one of the best defenses in the league in his Dallas days...

Coached a 3-4 unit into a strong defense despite having never coached 3-4 (Parcells wanted it)...

Took the no-name players on the Bengals defense and molded them into a good unit...

Turned malcontents like Pac Man Jones, Rey Malauga and Vontaze Burfict into solid players...

Believes in and has always run a very aggressive, attacking, no-quit/no give style of play...

Recognized by players and peers all over the league as one of the best coaches around...

Basically, he's been around forever and continually gets talked up about how good he'd be as the man in charge. Yet somehow, for whatever reason, every year the opportunity just doesn't materialize.

Essentially, he's the Dave Gettleman of coaches.

With that said, id only consider him if he regularly fielded a top 5 D

People said the same thing about Pete Carroll.  How is he doing?

 

Caroll has about twice as much experience as an NFL coach (head coach and assistant) and was more successful than Saban at the pro level before going to USC.

 

 

I liked Vic Fangio because he is candid and straightforward. But he followed Harbaugh to SF. He is a long tenured DC and not a HC. I don't know the sentiment toward him from his days here.

 

Mike Zimmer has been a good DC, yet has not landed a job. Parcells says he's ready, and to summarize his remarks, "Why hasn't anyone hired this guy?" -Last I checked our coach was passed up and when we finally hired him people were saying "finally". Not saying Zimmer is RR, but simply no. 

 

How exactly do you praise one guy for being a longtime DC and pan the other for the same reason?

 

And if you think there's similarity between Zimmer and Rivera, you may want to re-read the article you linked...

 

This subject has been brought up every year when Zimmer turns into a candidate for a head coaching gig, but fails to secure the job. Generally speaking, Zimmer's blunt honesty (though celebrated in Cincinnati), may have hurt his chances. At least that's true for the Dolphins job last year.

 

The Dolphins liked Zimmer’s rèsumè, and he and general manager Jeff Ireland have a good relationship. But one source said he might have been too blunt and honest for the Dolphins’ liking. Zimmer can be outspoken at times, including calling former Falcons coach Bobby Petrino a "gutless b--tard" for leaving the job without telling any of his assistants.

 

You heard anyone describe Rivera that way, recently?

I wouldn't mind Gruden.  He is a quarterback type of coach and would be good with Cam. 

 

 

Whoever it is, needs to be someone who will use our strengths to win a few games.   Have the NUTS to make a stand and close out a game.

Jon Gruden would be a horrible choice. The players hated playing for him which led to his dismissal.

Jay Gruden on the other hand could be a good pick-up although I don't know if Can would fit into his style of offense.

When I see that resume, I see the same as Rivera. Including the part where his name comes up every year, yet no one hires him.

I think it's time we move away from hiring "overlooked" coordinators. Maybe try hiring someone with a smidgen of head coaching, or even a long time assistant head coach, experience.
