Carolina Panthers Rankings

Our offense wasn't one of the worst in the league last week (football outsiders i believe had it 9th) and this is just on game in which we completely outperformed last year's team against the same opponent.

Well, according to the rankings (nfl.com/espn.com) which are purportedly based upon stats, we rank 28th in the league. That's unacceptable.

This is not an analysis thread.

This is a stats and rankings thread.

The stats are the only thing that matter here.

Oh okay then, football outsiders ranked our offense 9th and NFL advanced statistics had our offense ranked 17th.

Is that acceptable to post? ;)

Only if you are interested in seeking out the stats that most support your point of view.

I am just using the stats on the NFL.com stats page that I have used for years.

Our offense was bad last week plain and simple. The issue about whether Shula called a good game is not is not really as simple. I think is was okay. I am waiting for more information to decide if this is a trend against most teams or simply due to Seattle. We will begin to get a sense of things. Much like New England problems on offense were exposed. Sure lots of folks have been critical of Shula. And the offense was anemic

What was our offense ranked after Week 1 last season? We had like 300 yards passing, probably close to 0 yards rushing, and 10 points...for all the people astounded as to how we only scored 7 points on the Seattle D this year, we scored 10 against a relatively crappy Tampa Bay defense. And yet the backlash of our offense this year seems far worse than last.

The difference is obviously Shula. It just seems like a case of people wanting to prove they were "right" in denouncing Shula as an OC before the season began. Not saying Zod in particular...there were a lot of Shula skeptics before the season began. After game 1 last season vs game 1 this season, I'm taking Shula over Chud. I'm not taking 2011 into consideration though, just looking at our offense as separate entities season by season. For all the flak Shula gets, he was at least efficient...a 70% completion rate and over 5 ypc on paper is a damn good offense. Much less 3 and outs than Chud and Shula makes me want to pull my hair out of my head much less than Chud did. I'm still blaming execution more than coaching...especially after hearing there were open players down the field (mainly Ginn) on a number of pass plays but Cam chose not to take a shot.

It's funny how people were praising Shula in the first half and at the end of the game he was all of a sudden terrible. Yeah some of it may have had to do with lack of adjustments, but I'm pretty sure if we had won (which very well could have happened if DeAngelo hadn't fumbled), we wouldn't be hearing all this about Shula and our offense. It's that "winning is everything" mentality...reminds me of all the flak Cam gets as a QB just because of his record.

I look forward to seeing another game so we at least have a comparison. I am not afraid of the comparison. I think with Cam throwing deeper and hopefully players not dropping wide open passes we should be okay. Lets be honest if Cam's receivers were making ridiculous catches like Wilson's were We would have scored more points. No blame on specifics just making an observation. Is that an excuse. No more of an explanation. We don't need excuses because that game is history. We make the next chapter tomortow. And lets be honest that if you are a Panthers fans and not just a lover or hater of a player you are rooting for the offense to have a great day. If that is not your wish then you are dead to me in his best Brando voince.

I am just going to leave it at this for now. It is a long season, this will play itself out, and we can just revisit this on a week to week basis. The facts will come out.

Zod and others may end up being right about Shula, I think people misinterpreted what I was trying to say.

The only point I was trying to make was that after further analysis I wasn't as discouraged as I was immediately after the game.

I wasn't saying Shula is goat, I think there isn't enough evidence to fairly grade him yet, but I also don't think play calling was a major issue last game.

I think we will improve this week. Our offensive unit is used to producing and has pride in what they do. We have receivers in contract years and on 1 year contracts. I think we will perform better as a unit tomorrow. Or at least that is my hope.

In my estimation, the main difference between this year and last year is expectation.  Last year, many people just didn't know what to make of Rivera because Rivera and company were still relatively new and had displayed relative success, but people still really didn't know what to make of the developing team culture, and didn't have another year of knowledge (particularly on strengths and weaknesses of individual coaches and players) to base their opinions on.  Now, there is no benefit of doubt, and because of the rising level of frustration against the backdrop of higher expectations, fans are less forgiving (especially the knowledgeable Carolina Huddlers  ).

I think we will too, because if we don't there will be a complete huddle meltdown.

Buffalo has a good D-line but they are hurting in the secondary. If we cannot throw against them, it may not be in the cards at all this season.
