Ron Rivera......before we knew

Am I the only one that isn't ready to just hate Rivera?

 

He's got some traits as a coach that really make me wish he'd get other aspects down. He seems to identify talent well, develop it well, and has kept the defense playing better than it was during his tenure here.

 

 

He makes a ton of questionable decisions on and off the field though and it's cost us games. There are a ton of good coaching candidates that appear to be available after this season-so he really needs to do something good this season to solidify his job here. I do not want to miss out on a Greg Roman or David Shaw because it looks like Rivera may have the hang of it after leading us to a playoffsless 9-7 year. There is too much talent on this team for that to be the floor.

Yet despite all those shortcomings he has taken a 2-14 team and brought us to 7-9.

I agree with game management criticisms entirely and it may be the thing that gets him fired, but he hasn't been terrible by any means overall.

7-9 is 7-9. That's like a Fox down year. We are ready for the playoffs. Cam brought back life to this dead franchise. We can't waste it with 7-9. I understand it's a process. But come on, this is year three. It's time for results.

Umm, no. Not even close. Rivera may turn out to be a poor coach, but Singletary was absolutely one of the worst coaches in recent memory.

I like Ron a lot and I think he a great defensive mind and a maturing head coach.  When we get into the playoffs this year and have the NFL's number one defense everyone will love him.  A lot more goes into a team winning games than just the coach.  I think we're primed everywhere except the right side of the O line to blow up.  

 

I think we'll get to the playoffs.  Ron gets a 3-4 year extension and once everyone knows Ron has arrived we'll make a decision on if we should keep Shula or bring in a more aggressive offensive mind.  

 

I don't think people give enough credit to the defense we have.  It's one of the best we've had here and the only thing that can stop it is a QB who has some Houdini in him and a lot of luck. Russell Wilson's specialty is making something out of nothing.  

 

It took Ron half a season last year to wake up and be aggressive on offensive.  I think it'll take one game this year.  He did have the right game plan against Seattle though.

There is actually a couple things that I am not sold on yet either. But we have improved his first two seasons after that disastrous 2010 season. Some of that is Cam for sure as well, but if we go backward this season it is time to move on.

But I am going to give him more than one game against a strong opponent before I give up on him this season.

I don't hate the guy by any means, I just don't think he's grown enough to keep his job as our HC.  I think he has the next two games to show otherwise (completely possible that he actually has improved and week 1 was just a very quality opponent...though things like calling our final timeout with 2:14ish left in the game annoyed me).

 

In the case of our team going from 2-14 to 6-10 to 7-9, I'd say that's the difference between having Jimmeh and Cam.  If anything, the leap in talent there should have been a MUCH greater improvement in our record and Ron possibly (probably) is responsible for us having LESS of an improvement than we should have.

For sure. But we have only played one game. Let's see how it plays out first.

I bought in at the time..  I want to see aggressiveness on game day..  Smash kill destroy got me excited.  I realize many people buy into the fact that "millionaires don't need to be motivated by their coach", but I feel that's kind of a bad joke..  Coaches have a lot to do with players being ready on game day.

 

I still stand by my original thoughts, if a coach can't get us back to back winning seasons and get us past the consistently inconsistent play on game day, then we need to move on.  

 

Fox was at the end of his rope, despite his early success..  And this year may prove the same for Rivera, we'll see.  

 

if this year is a failure, I'm hoping Gettleman can cut through whatever has been holding this team back.

This is the NFL and it's 2013. It doesn't take 3 years to build Rome. The 2010 team was not 2-14 bad. It was brought down by terrible decisions from management on down. A losing season last year was pretty much unacceptable and if it's repeated this year the guy is absolutely gone.

 

EdIt: And Jimmy Clausen. The overall talent level of the roster was not 2-14 bad.

I think this is how most of us feel. This is it. I am excited about Gettleman though. I really like what he has done so far. If we go back to rebuild mode, I'm glad it's him making the calls. Question: how often do teams have success when a new GM keeps an old head coach?

Why do panthers have to settle for mediocrity going on year three when other teams can win instantly?

 

Because of the sisyphean belief that he will lead us to success this year
