According to FootballOutsiders, Panthers Offense 9th Best in Week 1

Advanced stats are very limited in what they can show after a single game.  I think Teeray's analysis already showed our offense wasn't as bad as it may have looked, but I want to see us against other teams first before I am sold... or not... about our offense.

Nobody rational is to saying fire Shula.

 

However, had Seattle had 250 yards and 7 points at home after many losing seasons, while employing an OC known for his conservative he has been in the past, there might be concern.  Instead, they had nearly 400 yards.  Moved the ball well.  Had 3 scoring drives...

 

The Steelers had, what, 200 yards total on offense and had as many points on offense as the Panthers?  Their fans are bitching.  People sare aying playcalling is the problem and players are trying to defend the coaches.  Sounds familiar, doesn't it?  I have no idea if the Steelers should fire their OC, I don't know enough about them, but if they had Shula as an OC I think they'd be justified in being worried.

Yards have absolutely no barring on overall performance. Had Olsen not dropped 2 gimmie first downs (1 was a gain of 18 yards, the other was 22), thats 40 yards min plus at LEAST 3 more plays on each drive from inside Seattle's territory. We also muffed a punt that completely took away one entire possesion from us. Seattle had multiple long methodical drives that kept our offense off the field. Add all that to the fact that we were predicated on running the ball and thus killing a very large portion of the clock.

Obviously we all hope we can play much better on both sides of the ball (WTF was that crazy Russ Wilson pass and prayer that was completed along the sideline?!?). But juat looking at "yards" in a complete vacuum is asinine.

Fact is, we KNEW this was going to be a tight game going in and that the turnover game would probably decide the winner. If it weren't for two crucial turnovers (one on special teams, the other D-Will's fumble) the end score would likely be 14-12, Panthers win. 

 

Seattle's defense isn't the Saints defense from last year, they're one of the best in Football right now. We knew we weren't going to score 5738390563 points on them, and we would have gotten 14 if it weren't for D-Will's fumble, and possibly more if not for Olsen's drops or other costly turnovers. (not to mention Armond Smith, ugh)

2) people like to tell people in higher power positions (Shula, JR, RR, etc) that they're wrong, and us internet nerds could do better

3) people cant put anything into context and make terrible non-sensical arguments

The purpose of enforcing penalties is to compensate the opponent for whatever opportunities were missed as a result of the infraction, right? 

 

You contradict yourself in pointing out the good fortune of Williams fumbling out of bounds on our TD drive... so Shula's game plan should have accounted for DeAngelo fumbling the ball? 

 

Seattle made mistakes too, but the timing of our mistakes (especially the fumble on Seattle's 8 yard line during the game winning drive in the 4th quarter) were particularly damaging. 

 

It was clear that Olsen was a major focus of our game plan, the only real weakness in Seattle's defense is in the middle of the field and they struggle against good TE's so those drops were also particularly damaging. 

 

There's a HUGE difference in making zero mistakes and making the volume of mistakes we made on Sunday... Bill Walsh couldn't overcome drops, fumbles and poor blocking especially at key moments in the game. 

 

If I told you before the game that one of our receivers would develop a case of the dropsies, would you have guessed it would be Olsen? 

 

Anyone who has watched the All-22 tape can verify how big of a load of poo this is. There were receivers getting deep on their Corners and Shula never made the adjustment to attack it. Cam may have missed the read, but it's also up to Shula to point it out and go after it again.  I can't tell you how many times Seattle put 9 in the box with a single high safety and we just ran right into it.  That's absolutely asinine....

Ron Rivera has had the most explosive O in the NFL since he arrived.

The overreaction going on is just a bit much. Last season the O got dialed back and and the big plays disappeared against Seattle as well. Just a matchup thing.

Newton is explosive....really doesn't matter who his OC is. He will be it when he isn't facing the leagues beat secondary and it becomes just foolish unless everything unfolds perfectly

The offense was run how it should be. The deep routes to Ginn were there at points in the game, Cam just didn't throw to him. I think they will make sure to target him more next week and open up the offense.

If you have those things, but score only 7 points.... your game plan was a poor one.

I'm not trying to get myself involved in this argument, but I'd like to ask this.

If the Panthers march up and down the field all day, Cam goes for 400 yards and a 120 rating with a TD, but on five of those drives we fumble in the redzone twice, turnover on downs once, and miss two field goals so we only end up with 7 points, would you say the gameplan was a poor one? I'm not taking a stance on either side or comparing this hypothetical scenario to last Sunday, I'm just asking because you seem set that 7 points means the plan was crap and there is no gray area, only black and white.

A cynic is someone who despite looking at history to the contrary decides on a pessimistic stance.

 

The fact is the Panthers have had little luck over the past two season. Pointing that fact out doesn't make one a cynic.

 

Calling an apple an apple is not cynicism.

Actually a cynic is a point of view which pervades well beyond looking at history.  It also has the context of believing it won't get better and it will be this way in the future.  Cynics fail to note improvement or change their perspective despite evidence to the contrary.
