Are you a Cynic or a Realist?

Please explain how disagreeing with a definition makes someone a cynic

A cynic by nature disagrees with things and tends to try and find holes in things that don't fit their own definitions regardless of their relative expertise on the subject. Realists tend to accept that that definition is one way to look at it without necessarily totally agreeing with it or feeling a need to argue. If they disagree they tend to acknowledge the other's point of view before offering an alternative view.

I'm both, it really depends on the day.  I like to talk in real life, a lot.  I like to think that I can rationally (though not dispassionately  look at most situations from both sides to find a common ground.  Or other days the world sucks, I hate everyone, I want to be a hermit on a mountain with my zombie Apocalypse stash of supplies.

No such thing as a realist. Things are more black and white because the future is not real. There are many different paths that could happen yet only one that ultimately does happen. this makes being a realist nearly impossible. anyone who ckaims to be a realist who predictscthe future is full of poo. Just a pessimist or skeptic.being a "realist" more of a convenience for coming out after the fact saying "i told you so."

I'm cautiously optimistic.

I think you.misunderstand the definitions. Realists accept whatever happens and don't try to predict. They see things for what they are and act accordingly. People who tend to say I told you so are not necessarily realists or cynics. It depends on the context. But yes there are surely realists and cynics. But again most folks are not one way all of the time.

For example when discussing the Oline a cynic might say that we suck and we aren't going to get better. Gettleman doesn't know what he is doing and it is all a conspiracy to sabotage the team to get rid of Rivera. I know that is a little extreme but you get the point. A realist might say that I know that Gettleman has tons of experience as a scout and says he knows O linemen. So I am going to watch what happens to see if they improve as he says they will or continues to struggle. I am not necessarily sold yet but I am going to remain open to see what happens and will adjust my opinion based on new information as it develops.

Exactly. On those cynical days it is just good to avoid people and significant others. LOL.

I'm going to go ahead and say our offensive line performed better than many expected. The Bills pose a different problem because of the 3-4. How well are we going to be able to pick up the blitz is my question. Will Can call the right protections and does he have the freedom to audible into something more suitable?

And that my friend is a realist point of view. Questioning yet open to see what happens. I hope playing 3 3-4 teams in the preseason gave us practice handling that.

I'm a realist for sure.

I may be biased by homerism at times, but I try to back it up with some sort of data or perspective

But damnit, being a Panther fan the last couple of years makes it very hard not be become a cynic.

When everything that could go wrong does go wrong like it has for the Panthers lately eventually you start to believe and just accept that anything that can go wrong will go wrong

lol big surprise, they dont get it?!?!? nooooooooooooo

<= realist (other good examples: The Huddler and IamHubby. . oh ya and of course the OP)

. . . and of course we're all both of those things to some degree but the "label" signifies that you define it in a much more obvious way. Saying youre both of those things when youre only a realist 1% of the time, like when your wife is giving you head, doesnt make you a realist. lol
