NFC South Review

I got NFL Rewind, and I figure I should get my money's worth, so I watched the Jets vs TB and the Saints vs Falcons.

Here are my random thoughts.

Tampa Bay

If you think we find ways to lose, you should watch the last 2 minutes of this game. That's got to be soul crushing to give away the game on a worthless penalty. Next they've got the Saints... who are going to crush them. And then the Patriots on the road.... yeah this is going to end well for them.

They might be a scary team if they had a QB. Too bad they have Freeman. He's just not NFL material. Sorry Bucs.

Secondary is better with Revis and Goldson. Goldson is just nasty laying the wood. He knocked like 3 dudes out of the game at various points. Got flagged a lot though and will probably get fined.

Doug Martin didn't really impress, but might have been the Jets focusing on stopping the run.

Vincent Jackson do you want to come play for a real QB? Please?!? He's damn good.

Pass rush looks better than I would have thought. Front seven looks decent.

Conclusion: Defense looks improved, but Freeman looks worse, and if Martin can be brought down to earth, they're screwed. Bottom feeders of the division 5-11.

Falcons

I hate Matt Ryan. I don't know why exactly, but it's visceral. I see his little rodent looking face, and my blood pressure goes up. I don't generally wish ill for my fellow human beings, but I want him to fail in all of his endeavors in life.

Holy dumpster fire offensive line. They got beat literally every play. It was baaaaad. Real bad. Unless they upgrade somehow, Monsters Inc is going to absolutely destroy them.

Steven Jackson is a grown ass man. Dude is like two times the runner Michael Turner plus he can catch.

WRs and TE are solid. When Matt Ryan had any time at all, he was able to move the ball. Some clear talent here.

Pass rush is meh outside of Osi, and he only looked good on a few plays.

Rookies in the secondary actually did pretty well. Linebackers looked okay. Seems like a middle of the road defense, but the lack of pass rush from the front 4 could really hurt them.

Conclusion: It's only one game, but I don't know if the Falcons are the favorites anymore. If they can't fix their offensive line, they're in for a long season. Too much talent to fall to far, but I'll go with 10-6 maybe get a wildcard spot.

Saints

Damn you Payton you evil Vicodin addicted genius. Dude knows how to design an offensive.

Brees looks like his old self. Throwing lasers. The scary thing is they still looked a bit rusty. Expect the offensive to get even better.

Defensive line got consistent pressure all game. I'm really hoping it was the Falcons o-line sucking otherwise the Saints might be damn good this year.

Rest of the defense didn't impress, but as we have learned, constant pressure can make the rest of your defense seem great. I expect them to be average to below average, but that's all they really need to be.

Conclusion: Playing at home gave them a huge advantage. The crowd was fired up the whole game. Still, they looked good, and the defense looked improved. I don't think their pass rush is as good as it look on Sunday, but with a solid offensive and less than terrible defense, I expect them to win the division at 11-5.

How about our Panther's Review?

Panthers:

Extremely talented front 7 which will keep games closer than they actually are due to Shulaball. Long season ahead if teams figure out they can throw quick slants all day long.

I missed the penalty that lost the Bucs that game. Left the room for a snack because I thought the game was over.

Forty years of watching - heck, the Heidi Game was in my lifetime - you'd think I'd know better than to do that :(

I had never heard of the Heidi game before. Looked it up. Awesome history lesson. Pie for you for unintentionally forcing me to learn!

How about our Panther's Review?

I'm not sure I'd add anything that hasn't already been said.

Offensive line looked better than expected but Seattle was thin on d-line.

Secondary looks as suspect as we thought.

Front seven looks as dominant as we thought.

Cam looks like he's trying to avoid making mistakes out there. Not sure if that's Shula's influence, or Cam trying to be more "mature" in his 3rd season.

D-Lo is running well, and I expect him to have a good season. The two fumbles are a bit worrisome though.

On third and short Tolbert or Cam should get the ball. No one else should be allowed near it.

Honestly, it's hard to say if we fixed our biggest problem from last year. Our offensive couldn't go up on a final drive, and our defensive couldn't make a stop when we needed them to. Based on what I saw, we're the third best team in the division. 9-7

I agree with 3rd best team, but I don't think we will win more than 8 games.  It will likely be an up and down year.  In terms of coaching we might actually be the weakest team in the division.  I think RR is holding this organization back.

However, if we manage to be any better than 2-8 after week 10, we might make a late season run.  If we could be around .500 going into Nov. and Dec. there might be something there because we have a back loaded divisional schedule.

We seem to play New Orleans pretty close every year, could be a split.  Atlanta usually has our number, but they are not looking like world beaters this season.  Tampa Bay plays well against us for some reason even when they suck so don't write them off.

Looks like:

New Orleans 11-5

Atlanta 9-7

Carolina 8-8

Tampa Bay 5-11
