Happy 2 iphone day!

Really?  No fanboi-gasims over the new iphone?  No new thread?

Apples new phones are here, and no one who'se been paying attention is really surprised!  Most of the best parts have been leaked or hinted for a while, and we didn't get a "Oh, there's one more thing.." moment that used to make the Steve Jobs' presentations actually interesting.

So for the phones themselves, the 5s is the new phone with some interesting features as well as two new colors.  The 5c is a iphone 5 with a colorful exterior and a price cut (yet still extremely profitable for apple).

The main features of the 5s that make it compelling are:

1.  The finger print scanner.  New security for those who don't need to wear gloves or have clean hands all the time.  Actually, I really do dig that feature, I just want to see how it holds up long term.  A lot of pundits are saying this could be how apple pushes mobile payments (paying at the store with your phone) into reality.

2.  Improved camera.  While some say that mobile cameras suck and shouldn't be used for real photography, we live in the age of the mobile camera.  Cameras on phones have become a big selling point, and I'd say now that we're seeing camera phones that easily, handily outperform the old point and shoots you used to buy (less than $500).  Apple claims that the new camera will take better pictures thanks to a larger opening and sensor (kinda of in the vein of the HTCs ultra pixels). New flash that doesn't wash out your images, along with new picture processing software thanks to the more powerful 64 bit CPU inside.  Since that what my wife uses to take pictures of my son with, I hope it's really da-bomb!

3.  iOS7.  Apple's hardware czar/chief/head John Ive has "flattened" the OS, made it more colorful (good/bad depending on how you like the colors) and added some functionality.  It's been in the wild as a developer kit for a bit.  I've seen it on a few handsets, and it actually looks interesting.  I can't give a good personal opinion, except from what I've been told by those using it.  It's more like andriod/windows phone.  Is that good?  Hey, I'm all for adding to the functionality of the device because it only improves competition.

4.  The M7 co-processor which tracks your movement and the phones orientation.  The bad is that this will keep telling you to stop laying around, eating cheetos, and posting on the huddle.  The good is that it can tell when you're driving, walking, exercising, ect and change functions accordingly.  If this can cut down on those who text and drive...it will be the best thing to happen to mobile devices!  Good luck!

d-dAVE's summary (you're still reading?  Awesome!):  Same hardware, faster 64 bit processor, new OS upgrades are going to confuse your parents, possible awesome camera improvements, and a new way to monitor your activity.  Oh, and get ready for the deluge of accessories which are being announced left and right.

Thank you!

EDIT:  To be a real post, instead of some lazy excuse for one.

I'm no iPhone fan... my son is, he's a total Apple sheep.

Apple makes good phones.  Nothing at all wrong with them.

As far as this new 5S/5C deal, I think the only thing that's really exciting is the fingerprint tech.  Otherwise, it's just ho-hum.

The camera is no big news, the 64 bit processor really means nothing with today's software for mobile tech although it's certainly a step forward, IOS is what it is... new version or not, you either love it or hate it, and since they didn't increase the screen size, I think a lot of people that aren't Apple fanboys are really going to start getting turned off by the small screens if they haven't already.

Don't get me wrong either... they're going to sell a ton of these things... I just think that Apple is now in catch up mode, even if they don't want to admit it.

Not that I care but I mean iPhone is clearly the leader of phones. What's the first thing other phone complained do when the come out with a new phone. They compare it to the iPhone.

I'm pretty sure like half the planet has iphones

Meh, I'm sure the iPhone is a good phone, but I love my Droid Razr.  I'm going to upgrade to the Droid Maxx or possibly the X if I want to wait that long.

I'm sure the iPhone 5s is going to make my wife very happy. For me, or Android all the way. I hate iTunes with a passion, and I like my big screen phones. I didn't think apple is playing a bit of catch up in areas of design.

As far as the popularity of the idevices, I could care less. I read a number of tech journals, and one of the common refrains is that Apple's position of market dominance is eroding quickly. Hear what happened to their stock prices after the announcement? Not good considering it was a new device launch. It will quickly recover when they sell millions of iPhones. Many were disappointed that the 5c is retailing app high off contract ($549), which is going to make it still extremely expensive in the emerging markets of Asia. Lots of wealthy westerners have iPhones, but the rest of the world uses Android for the cheaper option.

Sure no doubt its popular but that doesn't mean its the best phone.

They do compare a lot of phones to the iPhone but it's precisely because its so popular not because its the best.

Windows 8 is almost ubiquitous on new PCs, does that make it the best OS?
