The 49ers are going to struggle to get more than 7 points in Seattle, because the Seahawks are just that good.  Is that what I am supposed to believe?

...well they did only get 13 in one game against them last year in both games.

...but honestly if we'd gotten 13 despite that turnover I'd be in a VERY different mindset.  The reality, though, is that we didn't.

anybody else find it scary that our HC says that play calling needs to be less conservative and our OC says that things went according to plan, just needed better execution?  Disfunctional anyone?

If not for Seattle penalties, we would have punted on all 3 drives.

Why is that? We could not get to our own 30 with decent field position and 3 tries?

Part of the game....we aided them with penalties as well. Can't wipe away a drive bc Seattle got a penalty. We were rolling after it. DeAngelo doesn't fumble and they weren't gonna stop us then

Point is offensively we didn't have the possessions....we did fairly well if we didn't have drop for Olsen and DeAngelo fumbling. With vets like that costing us....is that really a coaching issue? Or just guys screwing up?

Gameplan was good considering how the game played out....guys didn't get it done and hurt us. There are lots of games the coaches deserved a good bashing under RR....I just don't get shifting it to them here

I like how it went from Ron not doing something right, to Cam not taking chances, to Shula's Offense.

Last I saw we were leading that game 7-6 until 10mins left in the game.

And when the offense moved into the red zone the Panthers lost the ball on a very good defensive play.

Were there missed opportunities? Sure as poo there were. dropped balls... Hell I dropped my head on each of Olsen's drops. Especially that long one that he just couldn't hang on to.

Now... we DID play a defense that is regarded as one better defenses in the NFL.

The plays themselves didn't seem to be executed to the level they COULD have (with the deeper passes not getting thrown much)

Cam could have not trusted either his arm, or his receivers...

I think this is a combination of all this.

Shula not calling "big plays". Cam no throwing down field due to lack of trust in something. And when he did throw the ball early to one of his trusted pass catchers and he dropped it... And nearly getting picked off by Sherman on that one pass to Smitty that looked great. but of Sherman caught that ball it was 6. no doubt.

I think Cam pulled back a bit. I think Shula went with what was working and I think Seattle's defense was pretty good.

Oh well, move'n on to Buffalo...

SF scored

6 pts last year

and

13 in the 2nd game

They really took it to that Seahawk D last year...

So the huddle would have preferred to see Cam throw deep passes into the teeth of Seattle's defense instead of taking what they were giving him underneath?

Shula's gameplan was good enough to win this game, the execution was not and when you combine that with the turnover as a result of the muffed punt in the 4th quarter we have ourselves a loss ladies and gentlemen....

I wonder if Seattle fans are pouting because they only scored 12 points, even with having two turnovers for extra drives.

I see Zod (a photographer, right?) keep posting "7 points" as if that is entirely a result of Shula's play calling. I dont quite get it.

I don't anyone has said "Hey we just have to throw the ball down field."

The offense looked decent in the first half. Once Seattle made half time adjustments, we were shut down. This has been happening to Shula his entire career.

Hopefully we figure something out.

There were 3 possessions after half-time.

The first one stalled a pitch to Deanglo fails to pick up the first down. This I think you could argue was bad play calling. He called almost the exact same play before just in the reverse direction. I guess he figured it picked up a few yards the previous play, so it should work for the next drive.

Second drive he face a similar situation, this time on 3rd and 3, Shula calls a designed QB draw and Cam gets the first down. Then the drive stalls after a holding penalty followed by a screen to Olsen that the defense figures out (could be argued bad play call). Next play is a short pass to pick up some lost yards, and then on 3rd down Cam scrambles after not seeing anyone open (hard to tell without the full field angle whether this was a good read by Cam).

Third drive went well till the fumble.

I know you've got PTSD from Shula or something, but I'm a glass half full kinda guy, so I think the play calling was fine.

He actually did adjust and got more aggressive on the 2nd drive, but the holding penalty was a killer, and Cam wasn't seeing anything open down field (Shula's fault, the Seattle secondary, or our receivers?).

We'll know more after next week, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

    • Getting any level of competition and cohesion out of this roster is a job well done.
    • Not sure if anyone else is watching this D1-AA championship game but I don't know if these receivers have NFL athleticism but they got HANDS. These boys can flat out CATCH. This is a good football game.
    • People on here are wrong all the time. I mean some of our best draft picks people didn't like initially due to various reasons. On the other hand there have been a multitude of decisions made by people who are paid very well to know what they're doing that some Panthers fans here saw as a mistake a mile away. Well look man let's put all the chips on the table. Because your grievance is particularly about the QB position. The Panthers have had only two long term starting franchise QB's in 30 years. Thirty years. Two. This fanbase has seen a hell of a lot of poor to mediocre QB play and even short lived fairy tales like the Kyle Allen win streak or going back even further Matt Moore. As far as Darnold and Mayfield goes I think they are certainly overachieving but I don't think anyone here that was critical of either of them were wrong. They both had a heaping portion of humble pie here that has served them greatly now. Mayfield in particular because when he first got here he was still a cocky idiot. Darnold at least kept his head down and did his job for the most part. But I have a hard time seeing either of them going far in the playoffs because in the midst of some of their best games I've seen the same flawed QB's. Darnold is no Nick Foles let's be real with one another here. Baker specifically looked like hot garbage against our defense in Charlotte recently. And those best teams in the playoffs have all that on film and damn well know about it too if average fans like us can see it.
