shula responds to criticism

I don't anyone has said "Hey we just have to throw the ball down field."

The offense looked decent in the first half. Once Seattle made half time adjustments, we were shut down. This has been happening to Shula his entire career.

Hopefully we figure something out.

We had three possessions in the second half. That was it.  A seven play drive which resulted in a punt.  A nine play drive which resulted in a punt. And a nine play drive which resulted in a fumble inside the 10 yard line.  In all three possession we had 80 yards to go.  Few teams routinely score from that far away and on the last drive we had them where we wanted them.

How exactly was that getting shut down??

We punted on 2 drives....issue was we only had 3. I don't think Seattle made this huge second half adjustment....we just didn't have enough chances.

I bet Seattle punted 2 times in the 2nd half...

If not for Seattle penalties, we would have punted on all 3 drives.

Why is that? We could not get to our own 30 with decent field position and 3 tries?

Sure lets chance giving them free points by going for it on 4th down from our 30 yard line and just giving them the lead.. Ohh and fuuuug the defense lets just screw up the field position battle while we are at it even though our defense has been shutting them the fug down. Totally great call! Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Know what one of the advantages of having a stout defense is?

Taking some calculated risks on offense hoping for the big payoff (which happens more often then you think on well-coached teams with quality players) KNOWING that if your coin flip comes up tails that you have a good opportunity recovering from that failed chance BECAUSE YOUR DEFENSE CAN STOP THEM.

Which, you may have noticed, they were *doing* more often than not against Seattle.

The last drive we had them where we wanted them? You mean we had them where they put us after numerous penalties. We would have not sniffed the end zone if not for that.

Was the ball on our 30? I recalled that it was more like around the 45 or 50.

I realize that it's a big game of chess, but I think we can pick up 4th an inches.

Yeah it was and honestly I like our chances if we had gone for it but our defense was basically bitch slapping them around at this point and we had the lead still. So I could see going for it but omg had we of not had gotten it.... Imagine 30 nuclear bombs going off on the huddle and the raping Carolina and Rivera would've gotten from the talking heads. We would've been the laughing stock of the nfl.

They did punt 2 times.  The biggest difference was the return fumble which gave them the ball at the 35.  They started the half, got that extra possession and they finished with the ball giving them 5 possessions to our 3. It took away one of our possessions where we would have had the best field position all day and made it simple for them to score a field goal which made it 7-6 instead of 7-3.  If it stays that way even when they scored a TD, a field goal would have put us ahead.

I know we did not score points, but your defense is stuffing them and you're averaging 5 yards a carry on the ground.  Shula did what he should have done.  Olsen dropped 2 passes, DWIll's fumble. Cam not seeing open WRs down field, Lafell's invisibility--- etc.  That is why the team did not score.

If it was our own 30, then I retract my criticism.  I thought I remembered it being either about the 50 or so.   I still think we could have picked it up with either Cam or Tolbert though.

    • That would be a great pick, he might be my favorite for us right now.
    • The coach- Canales was a rookie hc and at times looked like it. But he did manage to revamp the offense, helped Bryce not look like the biggest bust of the draft, exuded positivity,  and made the panthers watchable again. We have a viable head coach for the first time since rivera The gm- Morgan had some hits and some big misses. Hits- the ol, Coker, demani, dj at first. Misses- almost every d player signed, brooks, the jury is out on x. I get what he was trying to do with brooks/Hubbard but it blew up in his face. Hopefully he learns from his mistakes. But he did trade mingo for a 4th, managed to get a 2nd rounder this year from the Rams and I am a fan of constantly churning the bottom of the roster The draft- x can be a solid player but not until he catches the ball, brooks was a high risk pick that didn't work out, Wallace, demani and Chau Smith can be solid contributors and showed glimpses, Coker and jt should be mainstays. And flipping a 7th round lb that was about to be cut for Jackson was a great move.  The offense- had its ups and downs but Bryce has turned from one of the biggest busts in nfl history to a potential franchise qb, that change is worth its weight in gold, thielen was crafty and underrated as usual, Coker was a gem, jt was the solid but has some growing to do, and Hubbard has been awesome, the o line was much improved as well The defense- well...they set records, injuries, poor coaching (imo), bad playcalling and just plain sucking this defense needs everything to change, we need horn and Jackson back and we get brown back but we need bodies and an identity. If they can do with the def what they did with the o then we can challenge for the division bc we already have some pieces there.  Overall- this was a growth year full of questions and some of the major ones were answered(qb, coach). For the first time in a long time the season didn't end depressingly and I do have cautious optimism for next year. But they need to learn from the mistakes of 2024 and if they do I like where this team is headed. On to the draft and 2025
