Help Wanted: Second Receiver

We really need a big tall possession wr. Someone Can can trust besides Olsen and Smith.

There were not really any available in FA if I recall.

I hope they sign Nicks. I hate looking towards next year's FA already

If Nicks can stay healthy he's my top FA wish.

Lets face it--WR on this team has NEVER been addressed.  I suppose Moose in the second round was a solid pick, but we drafted Smith to return punts--the fact that he is a 13-year stud WR is pretty much luck.  He would have been even better if he had spent his career as a slot or had a #1 WR to take away double teams, so his accomplishments are incredible  In fact, we have leaned on him for 10 years. 

Since then, we have tried to find a WR in round 2--the USC busts.  We drafted drew carter off the surgeon's table.  Then Hurney got desperate took Lafell, Armanti, and Gettis in a 2010 attempt to fix this mess.  Our futility in Carolina has everything to do with the inability to find a decent #2 WR---after Moose, we have never had one.  Unfortunately, it has never been enough of a priority to draft one in the first round.  Instead, we take 2 RBs in 3 years in the first round.  They are easier picks, and Marty liked to take the low-riskers in the first round. Made him look good. 

 

WR, DT, CB--you would have thought they unnecessary players if you look at Marty Hurney's draft history.

 

This draft, expect a WR, S, and OT.

Have to get on the field to get open. Last I checked he was injured and unemployed.

Is it just me....I went to FanFest...watched most of the pre season snaps for Cam...and then the Seahawks game and Cam only looks for Smith and Olsen.    Is it me? (For right now I'm thinking this trait....to lock in on receivers....is what separates Cam from the truly elite talent in the league).  

 

There are many elite QBs who have their "go to receivers" that they lock into. Peyton and Peirre-Garcon and Brady and Wes welker, come to mind. U all seem to walk lock in step with each others narrowminded thinking even when u pretend not too.

 

You're not really being a critical thinker are you? Love how u know that u're not being openminded by stating: "for right now." The question is, what is driving your feelings now? Because of what u saw on TV? It's one thing to speak of what you see as an observation. It's another to make a broad and bias assumption about somwone without knowing the reason why Cam is doing what he's doing on the field.

 

The attitude from this thread might give some insight into the reason why this team seem to fall into the same patern mentally when the game is on the line. It's clear the attitude of many Panther fans, especially on this site is that Smitty all but walks on water. It's also clear the leash for everyone who isn't named Smitty or Olsen, on the Offensive is very short and tight.

 

The psychological well being of a team is just as important as it's physical strength. Think about that everytime you watch the Panthers fail to close-out games they should be able too. No one individual can seriously lose or win in a team sport.

I hate to say it but Tom Brady, Payton Manning, and Aaron Rodgers would kill for receivers like we have right now. Those dudes are throwing to no names before they got there. Cam is not any of them, granted. But Cam stares down Olsen, and Smitty too much. While talent is a problem to an extent, it's also some on the QB's progression to receivers.

While I do think we really need to address the position of WR to get another real playmaker for Cam, I see the point about the "elite" QBs making their no-names look great.  There is a balance there which we haven't found.  Either our WRs, Cam, Scheme/play call aren't quite syncing.  We need to either find that balancing point (like in NE), or get some very talented WRs who can do their job (Denver), or have the right plays called to allow them to get open against a D (New Orleans).

when he "passed on throwing to those "open" guys what did he do with the football? Because if he still completed the pass whats the problem? Just because there isn't a defender hugging the receiver doesn't make him open. He had 0 turnovers against a team that creates them. If Olsen doesn't drop those balls his completion would have been around 80%. It may seem to you he's locked in on Smith and Olsen it's because those are usually option 1 and option 2 if their open he's throwing them the ball. They have to catch it.

Somewhat a bit off topic from the last few posts...but to address what was being said earlier about Cam not looking down the field and making big plays...

 

Frankly, I was happy to see cam taking short/intermediate passes as often as he did this past game. Big plays are exciting and of course we like chunks of yards, but at the end of the day I would prefer a run for 4, and a pass for 7-12 and MOVING THE CHAINS rather than taking the chance of a big [ass for 20 plus that is just as likely to be incomplete/intercepted as it is to complete and gain yardage.

 

We need a 2nd and maybe even 3rd SOLID receiver to turn into the "passing" QB the league seems to demand, but personally I will be glad when the "big strong arm, gunslinger" moniker disappears from Cam, and is replaced by "clutch",,,meaning he completes passes more often than not regardless of whether its just 7 yards, or 20+. I will be happy if I never saw a big play again so long as it were replaced with consistent shorter passes that are completed and getting at least a few yards.

Right, cam threw for a whopping 125 yards and 1 TD. Correct me if I am wrong, but he had one completion with a reciever not named smith or Olsen. Go back and watch tape to see who else was open and who he targeted.

Don't worry, I am not bashing Cam, but take your homer blinders off and look at the facts.

LaFell would look much better with a QB like Brady.  As someone said, he's never going to be a guy that gets great separation, so he needs a QB that excels at "throwing receivers open," and that is one of Brady's specialties.  While Cam has good accuracy, he's not the type to do that.  He needs guys that can get themselves open, and he'll get them the ball in position to make a big play. 

 

To me, Lafell would be a great #3 on this team, but I don't think he will ever be the #2 we all want.

Armanti did have a nice run block. I would still like to see Cam look past Smith and Olsen. He locks on to them for too long too often.
