What a difference a single game makes

Interesting question, because I know many of us are not fully behind RR in the long run, even though we want to be.

Is it better for us to win at Buffalo and lose to NYG and head into the bye week at 1-2 or would it be better to be 0-3, possibly fire RR and start going forward?  Sometimes that puts a fire into the players and they play their asses off, and of course other times they flop.

I'd much rather be 2-1 obviously.

Do you have an example of when firing a coach mid season "lit a fire" and turned it into a winning season?

The whole idea that we might fire RR during the season is unquestionably the most absolutely absurd idea being kicked around on this forum.

But our players all seem to be behind RR. They responded well towards the end of last season. Some have been very vocal in their support of the current regime. I'm not sure his firing--mid-season, no less-- would be as well received among the guys in our locker room as it would be among those who populate our little corner of the interwebs.

Then they should probably win a game for him. Vocally supporting a coach means nothing.

If we go 0-3 it won't be a winning season regardless.

No it won't, but firing a coach mid-season is a move that the Raiders do. All it serves to do is piss off the players. Fire Rivera during the bye week and say goodbye to Smith, he'll retire. Hardy will go to wherever RR is the d-coordinator. Think Cam will stick around for another 5 years of "rebuilding" with a new coach?

Rivera better coach this week like it's his last as a head coach.

It should be his last game if he loses to the freaking Bills starting a rookie QB and mediocre D.  This isn't the Seahawks.

Why is it being tossed around that he be fired mid-season?  Because how many games do the Panthers have to blow in the 4th quarter until ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

I'm not really suggesting it, it isn't how our organization has worked in the past.

That strategy has certainly worked in other sports, but this moment it is hard for me to find an example in the NFL.

Mid-season coaching changes always light a fire...

...in the dumpster

usually not enough games in the NFL to make up the deficit, but it has worked in pretty much all other sports.  0-3 is a deficit, but one that is manageable.  Again, I'm not suggesting it, much rather be 2-1 but just a thought.

Rodeo's post above about what would likely happen in that situation pretty much on target.

Fast forward 2 weeks. There is 1 of 2 possible scenerios...

A. The Panthers are 0-2 and fighting just to stay relevant in only week 3.

B. The Panthers are 1-1 and could possibly take the division lead with a win at home against the Giants.

That is two very different scenarios, and a huge exclamation point on just how important this game is Sunday against the Bills.

So many questions, and not enough answers. Such is the life of a Panthers fan since the day's end on February 1, 2004.

    • Same... With the personnel the Niners had, that defense could have been historically good in the right hands. Under Wilks they were certainly good, they didn't quite rise to that level. Honestly, I see Wilks kinda like I see Rivera: fantastic person, decent head coach. Skill wise, phenomenal DB coach, so-so DC. His greatest strength is his leadership. Hard to find many better in that department. In the Xs and Os / execution area though, not as good. Bottom Line: Wilks is the sort of coach that needs a staff that excels in those aspects of the game where he's weaker. But, like Rivera, I don't know that he scouts assistants very well. That as much as anything might be why he's not in the NFL now.
    • Clearly the best outcome for us is a Giants W. A spot or two difference in the 4th round is inconsequential. Just look at the trade value charts. A spot or two at the top of the 1st means a LOT. A spot or two in the mid-rounds? Virtually nothing.
    • Agree. I don't think I have ever heard him say anything positive, at any time, about the Panthers. Best expectation is no mention at all.
