I hate these seemingly over-reactive threads, but...perhaps we need to change the OC, right now.

Cam may or may not be the answer, but this thread is about Shula. How you can poo on Cam on one hand, but support Shula on the other is a mystery...No, it's bullshit.  Shula doesn't have the skills necessary to be an effective OC in the NFL, and his record is very indicative of that fact.

All I have said is that Shula's game plans have not been bad.....conservative maybe, but they are balanced and should be success.

And, if you want to go by record, Cam should not even be on an NFL roster.

Point is we drafted Cam as a franchise QB. We need to hire coaches that build around him and his strengths. Shula doesn't, plain and simple. Utilize strengths because if you don't the only thing we'll have left is glaring weaknesses.

Shula obviously is stubborn and wishes to scheme his way - thus not adapting his plan to utilize the strengths of our offense and QB.

Problem is that I still don't believe the spread offense (the one that supposedly plays to Cam's strengths) is a long term solution in the NFL.

Look at Cam, Kaep, RGIII, etc....they all had their 15 minutes of success.  Now teams have a little tape and they are all struggling this season.  You win FROM the pocket as a QB...not running the ball.

Shula's game plans have been exactly what I thought they would be: built for the 1980s.  At some point, during the game and throughout their career, an OC is going to have to be able to adapt to the situation at hand.

Exhibit A:

Now I am not going to go back and forth about Cam vs Shula because that's not what this is about, but you can't keep calling plays that take forever to develop if your QB is getting blasted. At some point you have to call a screen, outlet pass, draw play or something to keep defenses honest.

There is a reason Cam looked pretty damned good his first year and the second part of last year. It's the play calling.  The reason that Cam appears to have retrogressed this year may be partly his fault, but the OC and HC have to take some blame, as well as the GM.  Cam must be given weapons, and put into a positions to play to his strengths. It's an OC's job to develop strengths, not pigeonhole them.

Now I know that you are trying to cast negative light  upon Kaep and especially RG3, but the jury is still out on these guys (not only for their careers, but for this season), and the fact is is that both these guys are more than running QBs (as is Cam). These guys threw for thousands of yards in college, so, much like Russell Wilson, they just have an added dimension---or threat---to their games. Good OCs are going to know how to exploit this advantage, and make the opposition pay when they get overly aggressive.  For an OC to try and force a square peg into a round hole, particularly in the modern NFL which is gradually evolving and showcasing much more dynamic play calling is just ridiculous.

Wait about three years to see what these guys become, and then talk (or shut up, as it were).

I am pretty sure I posted that after Seattle game. Not sure if this is a bumped thread or something

Idk I've been saying it since the Bills game. Shula goes into a shell when defenses start playing tough. Too bad 99 out of 100 huddlers don't recognize what situational play calling is.

All you guys are doing is making yet ANOTHER excuse for Cam and the offense.

It is his OL...it is his WR's...it is his coach....it was his defense.

You sound like the idiot Atlanta fans that made the SAME excuses for Vick....yet Ryan came along and had double digit wins the very next year with the same OL and same WR.

hmmm, i think there might have been one more significant difference between the 2007 and 2008 falcons.  somebody help me remember.

http://www.footballperspective.com/the-early-returns-on-mike-shula-are-not-good/

The early returns on the up-tempo offense are not good — how did the team run just 49 plays against Seattle? Carolina was one of the few teams to have success on the ground in week one — the Panthers rushed for 134 yards on 5.2 yards per carry, placing them in the top six in both metrics. And while Cam Newton didn’t have a great game, he completed 70% of his passes, which usually leads to lots of plays. How does a team that runs well and throws only seven incomplete passes score just 7 points and get limited to 49 plays? As it turns out, Mike Shula bears some of the blame.
