Greg Cosell critiques Cams throwing style

I just want to see if I am understanding Greg's and everyone who is supporting his theories about Cam correctly...

A)Cam is such an absolute unequalled freak of nature that he can abandon all technique and use his otherworldly arm strength and still be the greatest statistical QB the league has ever seen in the first 2 years?

B) If Cam can evolve into a more polished QB (using footwork and body torque) there is no one past present or in the foreseeable future that can match his potential greatness?

If you answered yes to one or both of these questions then I have to say that.....

I agree.

The one facet of Cam's game that he needs to improve on his indeed his footwork......

When you see over every single person on the field , you don't naturally and subconsciously feel the need to move in the pocket, which keeps your feet lazy, and that combined with the speed of the game results in arm throws. This is amplified by the fact that Cam spent most of his college days in the shotgun, where his coaches likely didn't spend too much time concerning themselves with his footwork.

He just needs time, and if his accuracy is as good as it is now with shaky footwork, I'd hate to be another team once he grows into that part of his game.

And that really what Greg was talking about in the audio clip. Better footwork means better weight transfer, better weight transfer means better stride and trunk rotation.

I think playing under center in a rhythm 3-5-7 step drop passing helps young QB develop good fundamentals. Throwing from shotgun can create or reinforce sloppy footwork and mechanics because there is no choreographed footwork like with rhythm drop back offenses.

Long way of saying that I think Shula offense could help Cam's footwork because he'll be in shotgun less and throw more on rhythm 3-5-7 step plant/hitch throw etc.

Also, I agree that Cam's accuracy is already good and will improve as he masters the offense. When he masters a play he'll be thinking about where to place i.e. lead the receiver vs slow the receiver down vs front shoulder vs backshoulder etc as opposed to thinking about which receiver will be open.

Note: I'm not a Panthers fan, Redskins all the way! I've been a Cam Newton fan for years. He is the greatest college football player I've ever seen (the iron bowl was sick!) and had the best rookie season I've ever seen.

He talked about how some QBs stride into their throw like a Mat Ryan. Others torque them like a Brett Favre. But cam is an arm thrower. He doesn't consistently use his entire body starting with his feet to throw the ball. He has the arm strength to get away with it. Many NFL QBs could not throw the way Cam does. But the sacrifice is accuracy.

Another important detail is ball placement. Getting it there isn't enough. The elite QBs place the ball away from the defender or in a place were the WR can make a clean catch and run. This is something that separates the "good" from the "elite". Cam is already good but if he wants to become elite he has to improve accuracy and placement.

Then he just got into stuff like how eventually a running QB is going to be put in a spot were the only option is pass. That is why Cam needs to develop in the pocket.

Agree completely. This is not meant as criticism but observation of how Cam can get EVEN BETTER.

I was hoping that all the work we heard about in the offseason was improving mechanics as well as attitude. So far in prseason games, mechanics still look shaky. Like Vick admitted recently, he relied too much on ability and didnt take his game to the next level early in his career. Accuracy improvement would make Cam as great as everyone thinks he could be.

My issue with the talk is this....

There isn't one way one to play the game and win....

Every QB doesn't need to try to be Peyton Manning. You will esstentially ruin some guys focused on making them X when they could be something different AND great.

Brett Favre was a great QB. He was great bc what he did was embraced and rolled with it. Cam Newton is a unique peg....I think you either let him go down his own unique path or it doesn't work. That has always been my Gettlemen fear....the death of Newton in Carolina. No NFL team would even interview this guy.....and that was bc was deemed "old". Lots of ways to look at how he could be old...

Very interesting POV. To be honest, Favre won though. Cam and the team need to win, I am sick and tired of being the laughing stock of the NFC South and everybody laughing at us. I don't care how he gets it done or the team gets it done, as long as he and the team get it done.

Lol nobody is laughing at us in the NFC South.  We finished better than 2 teams and Atlanta is scared shitless of us.

Our front 7 puts a mean hurtin on them and Cam comes to ball vs ATL.
