Across Enemy Lines - Seattle Seahawks

it has to be just enough that the other team is forced to expect it and keep a spy on him. this takes one player out of play, essentially. i think it was a fine strategy for someone like vick who wasn't a total package Qb who could throw the ball. for someone like cam who can really stretch the field and who has smitty commanding double coverage, olsen who is just flat dangerous to them, lafell who is just plain respectable, and a guy like ginn going long...yeah i'll take that. their defense is going to be spread thin.

it really sounds like, tho, that they are more concentrated on him running and are more focused on stopping it. this only opens things up for other options. i love that they don't trust his arm.

Actually I would say the opposite. The ability to throw down field is what makes the read option more potent. If Vick can't throw it won't be very effective, or at least as effective as it should be.

I was already pumped because its week one, but I just read over on that Seahawks.net forum and holy mother of god I've never seen a group of fans that so quickly and so completely buy in to what the talking heads say. It's kind of a trip. These guys are so cocky over there I hope we smash them so bad that the entire section of southwestern Canada goes on suicide watch.

From the Seattle Times ...

This tells me the Seahawks are going to contain the pocket more than actively try to move Cam out of it. Look for fewer blitzes and a linebacker spy.

Yes, but every team is going to contain the edge on RO offenses. That's the first step, apparently. The second, but this is true of every D on every down played, is to maintain your gaps.

But the new DC is more aggressive than Gus was, so you'll likely see more blitzing than last year.

On Defensive End Cliff Avril's injury by Oregon Live

Avril has been very limited in practice, and likely will not play. This puts Schofield in at defensive end which is a new position for him. If this happens, the Seahawks plans of containing Cam in the pocket gets much more difficult. It takes years of experience for a defensive end to contain a QB of Cam's caliber.

Seattle has done LEO-by-committee all along to some extent, though mostly Red, so this may not matter as much as it typically might for other teams that stay in the same base offense all game. Schofield is a 4th year guy, also.

From the same article..

Michael Bennett had a solid year last year playing for Tampa Bay. However, a rotator cuff tear is nagging him. Bennett has decided to play through the pain in 2013, postponing his surgery until 2014. It remains to be seen how effective he can be.

Bennett played with it last year. His response when asked about it was that he played with it last year, why not this year?

I think Wagner has crossed the line a little from confident to arrogant.

No. Like Kuechly, he's extraordinarily humble. You are extrapolating a lot from an out-of-context quote. Also, bear in mind that in communication 60 - 70% is non-verbal, so most of the meaning and intent is lost if you read the words instead of hear them and see the speaker.

Yes, I have the benefit of watching 'Hawks media day in and day out, I realize, but believe me,what you just said is completely incorrect.

A sprinkle here or there is fine.

If it is the mainstay of our offense.... its going to be a long season.

Shula has to be fluid in his play calls and change based on what seattle's d is giving us. Now, history shows he's not great at doing this, but he's never had a QB of cams caliber.

Good breakdown of the articles. Seems logical.

You need to bear in mind the Seattle D faces a player just like Cam every day. I know you guys here think Cam is head and shoulders over Wilson because he is literally bigger, Wilson, if you've looked at the film is fast, but is actually more "quick" than fast. The differential here is not enough to make difference to our D,

Also, you should have noticed by now that the key on D for Seattle is speed and unique skills. Speed kills the RO if you keep your gaps. There's a great example of this on the Seahawks' site right now from last years game, though this was actually more of a traditional option play with a shovel to the RB, where Browner anticipates the play but doesn't over-pursue. That's the real key to the RO or Option: Let the play come to you to the extent you don't over-commit.

Seattle's secondary doesn't double-team. They don't have to. In a way, I am actually hoping Browner is out this game because of the match-up. The guys behind him are faster, and Thurmond may be better. He lost his job to Sherman solely because of injuries, but seems to be 100% now.

I assume Sherman has developed since becoming the starter, but Thurmond was the better CB at the time he got injured. If he's 100% back, as his pre-season play indicates, you will be playing this game with two Shermans on the field, essentially. As Carroll said, Antoine Winfield ran into the wall of Walter Thurmond.

Wagner is a beast. Great LB. hopefully we can exploit the injuries and can seal him up with Tolbert.

You haven't read your own fans' posts here? You guys are hyping yourselves even though nobody else is. You act as if the Seahawks didn't post 150 pts over three games, didn't lead the league in points allowed by more than 2 pts., didn't come within two points of the NFCCG, didn't have the third best running game, didn't have a Top 5 passer, didn't beat SF 40+ to 13 (not at the beginning of the season, but just before the playoffs), etc.

What, exactly, are we not supposed to be excited about? How are we supposed to not be considered one of the top 3 teams in the NFC?

Try reading this. I wish there was anyone doing anything s complete over here. Or as balanced. http://www.seahawks.net/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=72017

your confidence is cute. you will abandon it when luke keuchly literally rips russell wilson's beating heart out out of his chest and clutches it with an evil laugh like the fuging shaman on temple of doom and drops him into a breathing pit of fire

I think there is a misconception here. It seems all Seattle fans that come to this board believe we, the panthers fans, think we're untouchable. Most of us don't think that at all. If you look at some of the other posts, it's obvious most of us are not even optimistic.

But, then we see the .net posts where Seattle fans are saying we get beat 75-3, which is absolutely laughable.

I'll agree that Seattle is the better team, and it's probably not that close, but seeing things like that makes me discredit much of what else is said.

    • Same... With the personnel the Niners had, that defense could have been historically good in the right hands. Under Wilks they were certainly good, they didn't quite rise to that level. Honestly, I see Wilks kinda like I see Rivera: fantastic person, decent head coach. Skill wise, phenomenal DB coach, so-so DC. His greatest strength is his leadership. Hard to find many better in that department. In the Xs and Os / execution area though, not as good. Bottom Line: Wilks is the sort of coach that needs a staff that excels in those aspects of the game where he's weaker. But, like Rivera, I don't know that he scouts assistants very well. That as much as anything might be why he's not in the NFL now.
    • Clearly the best outcome for us is a Giants W. A spot or two difference in the 4th round is inconsequential. Just look at the trade value charts. A spot or two at the top of the 1st means a LOT. A spot or two in the mid-rounds? Virtually nothing.
    • Agree. I don't think I have ever heard him say anything positive, at any time, about the Panthers. Best expectation is no mention at all.
