Across Enemy Lines - Seattle Seahawks

Each week during the season I will be presenting you with pearls of wisdom from media publications that cover our opponents. Often times their insight is more valuable than our own local media.

Here is what they are saying in Seahawks country...

From the Seattle Times ...

While seeming to take a back seat in the discussion of mobile young quarterbacks, Newton’s 741 rushing yards last season led the Panthers and was second among quarterbacks to the 815 of Robert Griffin III. Much of that yardage came out of the read zone offense that is becoming increasingly popular throughout the league.

Seattle middle linebacker Bobby Wagner, recalling what worked well for the Seahawks’ defense last year, made it clear Wednesday they’d rather see Newton in the pocket throwing than taking off and running around the edge.

“I don’t think we let Cam run on us like that,’’ Wagner said. “We let him throw the ball and try to beat us throwing, which I don’t think he can do.’’

This tells me the Seahawks are going to contain the pocket more than actively try to move Cam out of it. Look for fewer blitzes and a linebacker spy.

From the News-Tribune...

Part of the reason Seattle played Newton so well last season was the team’s ability to make open-field tackles when the athletic quarterback scrambled or ran the option.

We played that read option well, but last year is last year,” Seattle cornerback Brandon Browner said. “He’s a heck of a football player, and he’s had the whole offseason to try and get better, just like we’re trying to get better. So we’ve got to bring our ‘A’ game, week in and week out. And it starts with Cam Newton.”

News Flash: A playoff caliber defense plays a college offensive scheme very well. Shocking. Lets hope Shula has ditched the read option.

On Defensive End Cliff Avril's injury by Oregon Live

If Avril can't go, Schofield would get his first shot at showing he can make the transition from outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense to defensive end in the Seahawks' hybrid 4-3. Schofield said the biggest difference is that he's almost always going toward the quarterback.

"It's just being stout," Schofield said. "I haven't faced any double teams playing in the league. When you're an (outside linebacker) you're basically outside of everything, but being able to play (defensive end) and being able to set that edge is very important."

Avril has been very limited in practice, and likely will not play. This puts Schofield in at defensive end which is a new position for him. If this happens, the Seahawks plans of containing Cam in the pocket gets much more difficult. It takes years of experience for a defensive end to contain a QB of Cam's caliber.

From the same article..

Another option for Seattle at defensive tackle could be Michael Bennett. Yet another of Seattle's free agent signings to make over its defensive line, Bennett can play tackle and end.

Michael Bennett had a solid year last year playing for Tampa Bay. However, a rotator cuff tear is nagging him. Bennett has decided to play through the pain in 2013, postponing his surgery until 2014. It remains to be seen how effective he can be.

If any of you have had a rotator cuff tear, you know how painful it is. Its hard to imaging a guy playing defensive line like that. Its also a degenerative injury and will get worse as the season progresses and it tears more.

I think Wagner has crossed the line a little from confident to arrogant. That's the difference between a guy like him and guy like Keek. Keek is humble enough to respect the other team, therefore, he'll be ready for anything their offense throws at them. Thank you Wagner for being a prick, you've made your bed.

A sprinkle here or there is fine.

If it is the mainstay of our offense.... its going to be a long season.

It was only sprinkled in during most of Cam's 32 games here in Carolina. Shula knows it works and knows Cam likes it

You can barely raise your arms above your head for the pain.  No batted down passes from him this year, bank on it.

Wagner most not be paying attention that no QB in NFL history has more passing yards than Newton to start off his career.....he isn't your standard "running QB". Sure he is inconsistent at times but few runners have ever had the passing ability Newton does at this level

Yes, and after a while of movement it just stays sore all over. I wonder how much pain meds he will be on.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
