Pete Carroll on the road

So maybe you're like me and wondered what Pete Carroll's record on the road as an NFL head coach is like. Or maybe you're not. Either way, you're about to find out in a way that can only be described as killing a little more time as we wait for game day.

For those that are unaware, Carroll has been an NFL head coach for seven seasons: 1994 with the Jets, 97-99 with the Patriots, and 2010-2012 with the Seahawks. Before going any further, I should point out that I didn't compare these numbers to other coaches because I don't really have the time. If you want to do it, knock yourself out. I will say the numbers didn't jump out as stone cold awful to me, but they also aren't that impressive either.

Here's the road win-loss record by year:

1994: 2-6

1997: 4-4

1998: 3-5

1999: 3-5

2010: 2-6

2011: 3-5

2012: 3-5

Overall: 20-36

Then I wondered what about just non-divisional games since divisional games have a tendency to go one way or another at any given moment. So here's that:

1994: 1-3

1997: 1-3

1998: 2-2

1999: 2-2

2010: 1-4

2011: 2-3

2012: 2-3

Overall: 11-20

Not much difference. So then I thought I'd take a look at his records for away openers. In his seven seasons as a head coach, Carroll has started five of them in enemy territory. His record in those games is 2-3. Opening up at a non-divisional opponent? Happened once, and his record is 0-1.

All well and good, but let's pile on a little more and look at the scores for those games. Like so:

Wins of 7 points or less: 7

Wins of 8-13 points: 3

Wins of 14 points or more: 10

Losses of 7 points or less: 16

Losses of 8-13 points: 3

Losses of 14 points or more: 17

This is the thing that really intrigued me here since a lot of people are predicting this game to be a close on, and in close away games (13 points or less) Carroll has a record of 10-19. Drop that victory margin down to 7 points or less, and his record is 7-16.

Just thought you might find it interesting.
