It is just the honest truth that no one pays attention to us.

It probably stems from the fact that we "burned" the national media back when we were solid in 2002-2005 and the talking heads actually picked us a few times as superbowl champions/representatives. We followed their predictions off by finishing with losing records and flat out looking awful.

To be fair (at least from their perspective) they gave us a chance back then and we lost all benefit of the doubt until we "earn" it again.

Personally I don't care what most of those idiots think because a lot of them honestly have no idea what they are talking  about in regards to the teams "they know" much less the teams they don't know.

18 (17). Panthers: Looking for big season from Cam Newton. If defense stiffens, they could be a surprise team as they fly under radar..

19 Cam Newton, the forgotten quarterback, gets his chance to show people he hasn't fallen off at all. His first shot comes against one of the new hotshot passers in Russell Wilson.

18 Ron Rivera is promising to run the ball some more this year. Unfortunately, the Panthers won't have Jonathan Stewart to start the season. Cam Newton has the talent, but his receivers are lacking, outside of ageless wonder Steve Smith. At least the much improved defense looks able to score some points of its own.

22 he Carolina Panthers haven't received much attention this offseason, which is a surprise considering Cam Newton is their quarterback. Being an under-the-radar team may favor this squad.

New general manager Dave Gettleman has done a good job reworking the depth chart through the draft, specifically in adding defensive tackles Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short in the 2013 class. The two war daddies fill the team's biggest weakness from last year. The remaining holes in the secondary, though, are concerning.

That said, this is a team ready to challenge the best of the NFC South. With Newton in his third year and finding himself more comfortable as a passer and a runner, he's ready to be his most explosive. Defenses in the division aren't built to stop a player with his size and speed.

24 Cam Newton says there are no more excuses, and he’s ready to emerge as the Panthers’ unquestioned leader. He rallied the team nicely the second half of the season but needs a wire-to-wire showing this time.

18 Cam Newton had a dreadful preseason. I took part in a rare conversation on Twitter (@walterfootball) last Friday where Rob Stanton of SeahawksDraftBlog.com asked whether he should be worried about Cam Newton. Evan Silva of Rotoworld pointed out that Newton struggled last August but had a great season. This is true, but Newton began the 2013 season sluggishly and was lucky enough to have Rob Chudzinski take care of the problems. Chud's not around anymore, so this could be a big issue.

Fortunately for the Panthers, they have a truly dominant front seven with Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short looking like very promising defensive tackles. Luke Kuechly, meanwhile, will be an All-Pro this season if he stays healthy.

19 Before we get too carried away with the Panthers' 5-1 closeout last year, let's not forget that only one of those wins came against an opponent with a winning record.

19. Carolina Panthers (7-9 last year)

2012 DVOA ranking: 13

Consensus Draft grade: C+

Vegas Super Bowl Odds: 66-to-1

Biggest training camp takeaway: The secondary is still a massive issue, and they're bringing in all sorts of journeyman to try and help.

At least I found one journalist who thinks we are a playoff team

The Carolina Panthers possess a plethora of talent on their roster.  There’s no question that Ron Rivera’s up-and-coming club can compete with the top teams in the league heading into the upcoming 2013 NFL regular season.

However, the Panthers have yet to prove that they can put it all together and perform at a high level for a full season and the team didn’t add very many new pieces via free agency or through the draft.

Toss in an absolutely brutal 2013 schedule that features the New England Patriots, New York Giants, Minnesota Vikings, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, St. Louis Rams and of course two meetings with the Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and it’s easy to see why the Panthers aren’t expected to be playing in January.

But don’t tell that to Panthers star signal-caller Cam Newton, who told Taylor Zarzour and Marc James of WFNZ in Charlotte that the club is on the cusp of its first winning season and postseason appearance since 2008.

“I really do believe it,” Newton said.  ”I’m not just saying anything because fans want to hear it.  I’m not saying just anything because it is good for my health.  And I won’t say anything that comes through my teeth that I really don’t believe in.  I believe in my players.  I believe in my offensive line that they are going to give me time to be successful.  And I believe that I have enough weapons at the wide receiver position that they are going to catch the football.  There’s no question about it in my mind.  I have an unbelievable running back corps.”

Thanks Cam!!

    • I am not at all interested in even thinking about a WR or TE. Let's see how the combine goes. He would need a lot more than that film to impress me. For a guy who watches zero CFB I wasn't that impressed. Good hands but nothing screams top 10 pick with him to me. He looks solid but nothing more. That's what I want a 2nd round TE to look like, good physicals and hands but lacks meaningful separation.
    • I think Tepper is a terrible owner, but not because he doesn't want to win. He's a terrible owner because he is impatient and doesn't know what the fug he is doing.
