Ron Rivera Press Conference

I represented what he said pretty dang well. It's a quick paraphrase, I didn't make people read into it or freak out without context. I presented it as out of context.

the question asked had to do with the team getting a slow start the past couple years and if it's an emphasis and something that it's been preached a lot, but then the reporter does something dumb and asked if it was putting too much pressure on them to win the first game and rivera says exactly...but he was saying exactly to the first part of the question which is it had been stressed.

here are rivera's exact words and you tell me if you represented them well.

exactly. we to stalked about starting strong. we talked about we finished strong last year, we want to pick up where we left off. we want to start strong and we're going to start physical playing hard. ummm...i agree and i agree with your sentiments about it the thing that people don't realize is that this is a 16 game marathon. you want to win them all. you want to win your first one, but truthfully you want to win the one you're about to play because that's the most important one. that's our approach. we're going to focus in on one game at a time and when that game is over you want to move on to the next one and i've talked about that to these guys and i think that's probably the most important thing that we focus in on this first game.

and your version...

-He wants to start strong, play physical, but not put too much pressure on winning the opener because it's a long season. Focus on a game at a time.

and it's that underlined and bolded part that you misrepresented that has caused the uproar. you did a good job with the rest of it, but i think you pulled a joe person with rivera's comments because he absolutely stated that the game you are about to play is the most important one and not that he wanted to put too much pressure on them. that was the angle the reporter was fishing for, but that's not what rivera said. rivera didn't say anything about not wanting to put too much pressure on them. he said he wants to win the first one, but each game is the most important game.

Say I didn't represent them well to my face.

If I didn't, it was not a Joe Person move to try to get hits, it was because I thought the "Exactly!" meant he was agreeing with the dude's statement. I heard the guy say it's not good to put too much pressure, then heard Rivera agree. The minimal effort I am willing to put into life lead me to writing what I did.

he wasn't. he started shaking his head before the question was finished. i don't think he really paid attention to that last part because nothing in that answer had anything to do with agreeing that there might be too much preached on winning the first game.

the message was clear....every game is important. each game is the most important game. when you listent to the whole statement i don't see how you can come away with anything else.

Reality: Rivera detractors look for evidence that they are right. They read an OP like this and say "See? Rivera has no sense of urgency, he sucks."

Others have decided that he deserved the chance to continue to learn and grow as a HC.

Finally some probably couldn't be more indifferent and say "Just win baby"

I'm one foot in the second group, and one foot in the last group.

Don't talk to me like I don't know, I'm well aware of RIchardson's meddling in the team operations. Why do you think this team fails so often? Let the people you hire do their fuging job, quit meddling.

he doesn't meddle.

you obviously have the Panthers owner confused with another franchise owner.

You all sure do panic about phrasing.

One comment and the board goes emo again lol.

I will say this again: it is not Rivera's job to get the players hyped up or to understand the magnitude of the opener. If it is then we need to cut everyone and start over. All he said is that losing the opener shouldn't mean that they give up all hope because it is a 16 game season.

For all of you claiming every game is a must win please tell me how many unbeaten champions the league has had since 1972.

I bet a third of you did not even see the conference and are jumping to conclusions based on text. I just finished with the video and Ron did not give me a non chalant vibe at all. He basically does not want everyone to burn out in the first game when its a long long season.

Chill people. I wish It was Sunday already.

I would be pretty sure that RR is telling them behind closed doors that they need to come out and prove that they are a real team. I am also sure that he doesn't want to give the hawks any locker room quotes to put on the walls.

"Okay guys bring it in. This is the first game of the season. We are going to have a tough task in front of us with the Hawks. I just want you to know, if we lose the season is over. So if for some reason we don't pull this one out. Everyone panic. Now let's go get em"

I hope our players aren't as mentally fragile as some of our fans.

I honestly don't know where the hell these retarded ideas about coaches come from. I judge Rivera on his missteps in play calls and situational coaching (the most difficult facet to learn) and people have a rightful beef there. But motivation and accusations of a lack of urgency? Shut your ignorant mouths. You look at the way the team fought in a meaningless game against the Saints and tell me they didn't want it. And now that the stakes are higher you think they lack urgency? Are people seriously that effing stupid?

It was mainly the reporter who was talking about being "concerned" he's putting too much pressure on the team to start strong. Basically Rivera said he agrees but he still stresses the importance of focusing on every game.

I cant believe what I just read in this thread....oh wait yes I can

You and me both, dude

I remember the last time winning week 1 was the ONLY goal.  It was 2001.

Week 1 is paramount.  Week 1 is not the end.

Ron is not an idiot, Gettleman is not an idiot, this team is not made-up of mouth-breathing fugtards.

They all want a week 1 win much, MUCH more than any of us do.

Chillax, brahs.

Ron's gotta tell them something.  What is he supposed to say?  "Yeah, I told the guys if we don't win week 1 we are officially forfeiting the rest of the season so, there you have it.  If we don't win against Seattle you can go ahead and give the Taints, Falcunts and Fukanears 2 wins as we are shutting the whole thing down."
