Cable modem/router

What is a good unit to support a single laptop, 2 laptops, connected cable boxes and gaming?  I'm working with an old linksys router right now, and it has been problematic for some time now.  I thought that while I am at it, I'd get a modem too, and stop paying the provider to use their sub-par unit.  Let me know your suggestions that are reasonably priced.

I bought the Motorola surfboard modem and it's been great. As far as routers, it's kind of a toss up between the various brands. I have cisco which I'm OK with, while others hate them. Look for your feature set you want and do some research. I've heard reasonably good things about the Asus routers.

You can use most (if not all) Motorola surfboard modems as wireless routers, right?

But before you spend any unnecessary money, make sure your firmware is up to date on your current router.

I've had the same $30 Belkin wireless router since 2007 so I'm not really sure of all the advances in that field.
