actually no.. i like to get picture of things other than the actual game play.. the teams reaction on the sideline.. the opposing coach looking pissed when hes losing with 2 minutes to go, little kids wide eyed on a 70 yard td score...  things that tell the story of the game.   you really miss very little of anything.. and you can still see the game through the view finder.

Good luck capturing that with a 200-400 mm lens from the nosebleed seats. Being a (mediocre) amateur photographer myself, I speak with some knowledge.  That's why I decided to leave my camera (and pretty good Nikor lens) at home last Thursday and just enjoyed the game.

As a pro photog, and with TONS of experience shooting the Panthers, Zod is probably right, but the OP does have a point about sideline action, especially between snaps.  That said, try a non-extending tele zoom with IS, coupled with a 2X converter if need be.  For protection, check B & H Photo to see of they have a compatible body/lens combo case.  If not make your own with an off the shelf body case coupled with a compatible lens case customized via straps/snaps for attachment.
